I have got a brand new USR Voice Fax Modem Internal model 3CP802884A replacing a Micronet 3000E SP external modem. I used to connect at 50.2K and now I cannot get more than 38.6K using the same telephone line from the same location. My OS are Win ME and Win 2000 whith SP2. Where is the problem?

Could be a number of thing affecting the connection, phone cord bundled with other cords, dirty contacts in the Line jack on the modem or in the wall jack, cheap or cordless phone, answering machine, etc. on the same line as the modem. Or it could be that the other modem was just making a high initial connection and falling back once the connection was negotiated (Windows only reports the initial connect speed, not the negotiated speed).

Try moving the phone cord away from other cords. Remove all phones and phone line devices (answering and fax machines, caller ID units, surge protectors, etc.) from the same line that the modem is on and try a connection with just the modem using the line.

Check the ati6i11 data in Hyperterminal after at least a 30 minute internet connection of normal browsing and downloading.

See http://modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.htm for setting up Hyperterminal.

Still got the Micronet modem (appears to be a TI based modem like the USR modem), try a connection with it again to see if you still get the 50K connection, post the modem log and ati6i11y11 data taken in Hyperterminal after a normal internet connection.

Might try the same with the USR modem.

See http://modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.htm for setting up Hyperterminal.
