I am trying to install a 3 Com US Robotics 56K Faxmodem PCI on my computer, I've got the modem in the computer, and the driver in, but whenever I try to use it, Windows 95, and AOL say that it's either not there or it can't open the com port. AOL won't even detect the modem. When I go to Control Panel, it's installed there under modem's on Com 5. Any suggestions?

Could be a problem with AOL detect the Com5, might try getting the modem on a 'Standard' Com Port (1-4, most likely 3 or 4).

See http://support.dell.com/us/en/kb/document.asp?DN=TT1040324

Note: just tried accessing the page above but it seems Dell's support site is down at the moment but it should be back up shortly.

If it is a 5610a it will not install on 4 or lower unless running NT 4.0 SP 4-6 or 2k.Software comes with a program called 3com dos box will be listed in add/remove programs. The program tricks ISP's to think the modem is on 4-1 see if the program is installed. If it is try reinstalling it

You can change the "portname" in the registry.

Their was reported a conflict with AOL drivers and USR's at another site. (Sorry, I'm not sure of the details, this is only the 20th site I've been to tonight looking for an answer to my conflict.)
