I'm having problems using Communicate! v10 on a Compaq
Presario 7AP 190 running Win 98 SE, via a GVC external
SF-1156V/R21 modem connected to my sole serial port
with a 9pin->9pin Radio Shack RS232 cable, specifically
with answering machine mode for voice calls. The
software makers have no suggestions to offer, and I've
had no newsgroup responses yet. Communicate! is about
the only retail fax/voice/etc software offered here
(Vancouver Canada), so it's presumably satisfactory to
many users.

The problem: everything's fine as long as the voice
caller ends their message with a "#" symbol as
requested. But if they just hang up at the end of
their message, the software and/or the modem, I don't
know which or maybe both, won't stop recording the
no-longer-there incoming message. The software's
silent timeout and message length limits have no effect,
with their default settings or as modified via the
software itself or via the registry. The registry
offers other variables that appear to be related to
timeouts, but I don't know what they're for and am
therefore reluctant to modify them.

Any specific help would be greatly appreciated, as
would general help in the sense of educating me, or
pointing me to a source, about the detection of caller
hangups and their handling.

PS: if you want to see a real mess, try hanging up in
this configuration during the greeting message! There
are still plenty of people around who hang up summarily
on machines. This results in polite requests from the
phone company to hang up, followed by that penetrating
warble they use in case you're in another room, all
still subject to the software/hardware's refusal to
let go.
