I was going to get a 3CP5610A USR modem since I can't seem to get the needed driver for the SoftK56 that came in my wife's system but after reading all the horror stories on this forum last night had decided against USR. I called my local OfficeDepot store and was told that about 3 weeks ago USR requested that OD return all USR products to USR and that they were replaced with new updated units. According to the OD manager USR said that they had gotten a bad batch of chips that were causing all the problems that have been mentioned here on this forum. Supposedly the new units do not have the problems. The OD manager also said that any USR units purchased at OD can be returned due to a special arrangement with USR to accept defective units back even after the usual 14 day return period.

Can anyone verify that the USR problems have been corrected in the currently available units, or was this just BS on the part of OD???

Well I just got off the phone with USR, they claim to have no knowledge of any problems like the ones described here with the 5610A. The woman I spoke to (Jonnie, not sure if that is the correct spelling) also said they issued no recall to OD for return and replacement of any defective USR products. She did tell me that the 5610A does not seem to support WinME and that a replacement, the 5610B will be coming out in November that will support ME. She says the 5610A is supported by the included drivers in XP.

I'm confused, my contacts with USR tech support have been very unsatisfactory, althought the past performance of their products in earlier machines have been fine. I beliave I will continue to monitor this forum before making any purchase decisions.
