I have a 56K internal Winmodem that cannot get a dial tone. About a year ago, I switched to a satellite modem, and the Winmodem continued to work for several months. Then it stopped, except for one time a few months ago when it did manage to connect. Nothing since.

I haven't changed any settings. Device Manager says the modem works. Modem Manager tests show the modem working but the phone line failing. I know the phone cable is OK because it works when connected to a phone. The modem makes modem noises so I believe it is actually OK, it just can't find the dial tone. Changing the setting to "don't wait for dial tone" doesn't make any difference. I'm sure the cable is connected to the right hole in the back of the computer.

I haven't uninstalled and reinstalled the modem, nor looked for updated drivers because the thing used to work fine with the ones it has, and since it does make dialing noises, I really didn't think the problem lay in this area.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Try dialing out using Hyperterminal.

See http://modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.htm for setting up Hyperterminal.

In Hypertermial do the following:

1. Type AT E1 <hit enter> (E one, entered blindly, allows you to see what you type afterwards)
(modem will respond "OK")

2. Type AT &F M1 L3 <hit enter>
(modem will respond "OK")

3. Type AT H1 <hit enter> (That's H one)

The modem should go offhook and you'll hear the dial tone.

4. Type ATH (the modem will hang up the line)

If you didn't hear the dial tone in line 3 then check the phone cord, make sure it's plugged into the LINE jack on the modem or try a different phone cord. Or it possible the modem may be damaged.

5. Type ATDT XXX-XXXX (XXX-XXXX is the number of the line the modem is on)

The modem should dial out and you'll hear a busy signal since the modem is using the line. Hit any key to disconnect.

If the modem dialed out ok then the problem is in Windows.

If the modem reported NO DIALTONE then either the modem is damaged or set to the wrong country code.

I did, and it worked fine right up to Step 3. Still no dial tone.

I've tried different phone cords and it didn't help. I'm fairly certain that the modem works because it makes modem noises, and I have a phone connected to the Telephone hole in the modem and the phone works. There just seems to be some reason they're not able to communicate with each other.

It's set to USA. The modem tests say it works. This is really a mystery.

Thanks,

If you didn't hear the dialtone when you issued ath1 (the command that tells the modem to go offhook, like you picking up the phone receiver) then the modem is defective.
