Hi,
I have a problem with a USR 56k Fax modem V.90 and X2. Currently I am using a Hayes Accura 28.8 that works without incident. I am using it on RHL 6.1 and 7.2 with the same outcome. If I switch to the USR, I can never get a connection.
ppp logs show that the connection is lost due to LCP echo timeouts, the remote host is not responding. It is not responding because the modem will not maintain a connection. I tried disabling protocols to possibly isolate the disfunctional one but to no avail.
Snippets of i6 as follows:

Disconnect reason is LD received
V.90 enabled
no v.42
no X2
connect speed 42666/31200

Disconnect reason is LD received
X2 enabled
no v.90
no v.42
connect speed 31200/28800

Disconnect reason is DISC received
X2 enabled
v.42 enabled
no v.90
connect speed 31200/28800

Disconnect reason is DISC received
v.90 enabled
v.42 enabled
no X2
connect speed 42666/31200

If this is not enough to make a diagnosis can you give me a list of AT commands to use that would gather enough info.

I can simply swap back the Hayes and everything works fine, so it appears to be a modem issue so far.

Here is some more data. It all looks to be within reasonable ranges except for 2 point training at 36.8 and codec distortion at 34.5. A normal range for codec distortion should be in the teens shouldn't it(?). I know this is not very good but what does it mean and what should be the solution?

You can't get a connection, or maintain one? In extra settings under modem properties, type s32=98 and see what happens.
