PENO Tl Posts: 9 USA | Posted - 11/30/2001 1:32:40 PM I recently built a new computer, installed modem from old computer...USR model 00569800. When exiting internet, computer stops responding. Control/alt/delete says system is busy. Have to reboot to get system running again. I am running Win98 sec edition. Modem does appear to disconnect, verfied by picking telephone up. Downloaded supposed most recent drivers from usr. I can screw around with different ways of disconnecting and actually get telephone to ring. Modem works fine in old computer running win 95. So I went and bought a 5699a. Low and behold I am getting the cracklinn line noise problem so many others have talked about. When this modem does finally connect, it will disconnect fine. I am not the most computer literate though this problem is educating me far more than I ever wanted. Can anyone help? |

Bob Starnes Tl Posts: 4360 USA | Posted - 11/30/2001 10:09:21 PM What browser are you using? Sounds more like a Dial-Up Networking problem rather than a modem problem, tried uninstalling and re-installing Dial-Up Networking in the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup under Communications? |

PENO Tl Posts: 9 USA | Posted - 12/5/2001 3:13:46 AM Bob, Tried removing/installing com program, still does the same thing. Note: when trying to connect using hyperterminal, computer freezes after dialing, connection never made, have to reboot. I am using eartlinks default browser. I reinstalled 5699a modem with a rf filter in the phone line. So far this modem is working. I would still prefer to use the other one if I could get it going. Any more input is greatly appreciated. Earthlink thinks it is probably something to do with Win 98. |
Bob Starnes Tl Posts: 4360 USA | Posted - 12/5/2001 9:08:40 PM Are you using Hyperterminal setup direct to the com port the modem is on or using the modem name? Using the modem name Hyperterminal communicates with the modem throught the Windows modem setup, using direct to the com port bypasses the Windows modem setup and talks directly to the modem. So if you're using the modem name and the system locks up AFTER dialing then I'd suspect a Windows problem, if using direct to the com port and the system locks up after dialing then I'd suspect a problem with the modem or a corrupt driver. Got a modem log (IF one was recorded) of a connection attempt while using the 5698? |
PENO Tl Posts: 9 USA | Posted - 1/2/2002 3:51:47 AM Bob, Got fed up and purchased a diamond modem which works fine. I am still interested in trying to get 569800 to work. This modem will connect direct to the com port. As previously stated, the modem works fine until disconnecting. Here's a stupid question, is there an easy way to post the log, or do I need to type in this area. To go along with all of this, The best connect speed I get is 26400. Quite certain it is line related due to same problem with a laptop that connects at better speeds in other locations. Phone company gives me every excuse that they are not responsible. |
charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 1/2/2002 11:25:46 AM what model Diamond modem did you get? see if it supports K56,you might force a K56 connection and get a bettier connect rate..try the +MS=V34 in extra settings |
Bob Starnes Tl Posts: 4360 USA | Posted - 1/2/2002 9:35:27 PM To post the log, just highlight the data in the log, in the menu click Edit, Copy and then in the Browser, click Edit, Paste. |
SARGE Tl Posts: 743 USA | Posted - 1/4/2002 7:05:34 PM If the line is impaired, forget it. Otherwise, on the Diamond, in modem properties, type S202=32S95=1 under extra settings. |
PENO Tl Posts: 9 USA | Posted - 1/6/2002 7:54:31 AM Sarge, You the man!!! Couple more questions, I want to speed up dialing. When add s11=50 string along with the string you gave, get a fault. How do you seperate the strings in extra settings? Also what does the string you gave me do? Bear with me I am new to this though learing quick. |
SARGE Tl Posts: 743 USA | Posted - 1/6/2002 4:31:08 PM S202=32S95=1S11=50 Saw some docs once on why the s202=32 is needed. Seems the firmware installers left the v.90 disabled, or something like that. The s95=1 forces a "true" report speed, rather than a 115200 or 57600, etc. BTW, if you experience disconnects, lower max speed until stable. Example: +ms=v90,1,,,,42000;s202=32s95=1s11=50 The 42000 allows a max speed of 42000. Depending on what you're already getting, just tinker with this particular #. You may not need anything at all. |
