here's an odd problem for everyone..

i bought a cheapo USR winmodem and it installed, connected, and works fine.

until i start playing online games.

i get about.. 30-60 minutes into a game (quake) or not even two seconds into a game (serious same 1/2) and the modem just.. gives up. it's still connected, but it resolves no address whatsoever. ICQ dies, AIM dies, every web site is inaccessable, but i'm still connected. resolving this problem is reconnecting, but it happens all over again. i've tried every. single. option. in every dialog i've ever seen to do with this DUN connection, and i have absolutely no clue what to do.

if i DON'T go into a game, the connection works as normal, as if nothing's wrong with it. but venturing into a game just kills it.

so what in the hell is my problem? :/

thanks..

v.Richard

It might be Windows.
I can tell you I had a very similar experience - but, a 'clean install' (in my case getting a new computer, installing Windows and transferring everything) solved the problem. Same modem. Same ISP. Now, I'm sure that there's something short of a clean OS install that would have fixed it, but I never did find it.....

However, here are some suggestions -
try pinging / getting to IP addresses directly when this happens; check your ipconfig - see
www.modemsite.com/56k/backbone.htm

Create a brand new connectoid for the ISP - and check all the settings
www.modemsite.com/56k/connectoid.htm

Good luck!

Aloha,
Richard

tried the ipconfig, tried the DUN, all done before, neither worked. :/ any other suggestions?

i'd rather not do a clean install. while yeah, my system would probably benefit greatly from it in the long run, i think i'd crack if i lost all my programs and such. maybe after christmas i'll burn a CD of a bunch of program setup exes and have them on hand to install when i do a clean install.

one question tho. if i do a reformat/clean install on one drive, do the long file names of the other drives stay intact? i'd rather not have big E:\PROGRA~1 on every folder. :/

Could be an interesting coincidence here! It seems as though most of the complaints about USR modems are based on a few modems with the "a" suffix,(The 5610a probably being the worst of all), and one or two with the "d" suffix,(maybe we should only purchase the original model, before changes).

Are we having fun yet?

Then I'm glad I've got a USR5610B on its way. I got so fed up with this modem I currently have. So when it gets here, I'm going to tear this A model modem out and throw it up in the air, and beat it to pieces with a baseball bat.

Ahh. I'm going to enjoy watching it die.

I'm having the same problem with my modem. I just upgraded my system, new mobo (dual mp1800) video card (ATI Radeon 8500), network card (3com Etherlink 10/100), SB Audigy Gamer sound card and Windows XP. I installed the new modem (3CP5699A)yesterday and have not been able to stay online for more than an hour. I connect great (usually over 45K) but if I do any kind of surfing I end up losing my connection and need to reconnect. If I connect but don't do any browsing it seems to stay connected with no problem.
...You want to play quake and I want to play Wolfenstein. ...Did your new modem work?

yeah, i've found, like everyone else here, winmodems really suck. this controller-based modem is really good. stays connected, no problems whatsoever.
