My symptom is a msg that "no dial tone detected", but the same line connected to the other slower modem in my PC works fine. It this an indication or proof that my tel line does not support 56K. What other test can I do to be sure?

Make sure your ISP connection is set to use the modem in question. Found in My Computer, dial-up-networking, right click your ISP, click properties. Also, the fact you can't draw dial tone has absolutely nothing to do with 56k.

No. With a 3Com/USR modem, you can check to see if your line is 56k-compatible. See
