As with approx 99.9% of every one else with the 5610a flashed to v92 or the 5610b modems.

It has been a nightmare.

I think I've been through about 17 different technicians at
USR.

They gave the same idiotic insulting answers most every one has received.

One even said to me that thier "readme.txt" file specificaly
stated to backup the firmware first.

What a Laugh!

A: Control Center does not have or offer a firmware/bios backup

B: USR has in my opinion deliberately removed all firmware/bios backup/flashing software from thier site, as
well as all the older original firmware which was there approx 6 months ago..

C: And there is no mention of backing up in the readme files.

The modem works in XP a little better than the previouis M$
operating systems.

I use Win 98.

The modem requires constant attention. The drop in speed is
a nightmare.

The usual disconnects and cut offs (durring downloads)\,e.t.c.

Here are a few hints we've found and tested that have solved
a few of the problems. We've also included below an excerpt
from USR Tech support on how to disable some of the V92 features in the firmware/modem.

Part #1: Before you make any adjustments in Control center goto the "RESET" section and reset the "hardware" option then return to your "Call control" section .

You realy only need so this once after you've installed new firmware or changed your modem drivers.

Part #2: When in Control center and you "save to modem" a % done status window pops up and shows you blue bars counting to fill the window upto a full or 100% complete. Then another window pops up and sais OK (button you can click to finish up).

Most of the time this bar only goes through once when you click "save to modem"

Right away try clicking "save to modem" again and watch that % bar.. It should repeat it self 3 times (the % bar wil fill up to full or 100% then clear and repeat a total of 3 times. Then % bar will disapear and the "OK" button will appear.

This 3 pass/cycle % bar is the correct save. If only one pass is seen then your new modem settings are incomplete and you modem will not work properly at all.

#3: Using Control center get the latest firmware.. The last one which was xxx_52245.dmf was nothing but a trial version USR sent out .. SHEEESH!

The latest version goes be the name "0056100x_5_22_46.dmf"

This version from what we can tell has windows 9.X, ME, and 2000 compatability built in.

Part #4: The v.92 deactivation init strings from USR Tech support; (Between the ===== lines)

Part#5: For those who have flashed the xxx_5245.dmf then flashed the 52246.dmf you'll notice that the PCM up/downstream menu now has both settings bars at 33.6 instead os 56k and 48k. For some odd reson this has poped up. Our results are rather odd when PCM is active. If any one else cares to test this. Please do so and post your results.

Personaly we find leaving this PCM off works fine . Testing
on a v92 ISP does show a 4.2Kps upload speed..

This + our tricks above have returned some of our connection and download speed. As well as solved most of the dial up
conneciton problems.

Please re-read part #2 as it's one of the main problems with Control center and the 5610x USR modem series.

The 5610B is probably all of the old stock 5610A's that were returned by irate customers. USR updated the firmware in the old 5610A's and put them back in circulation. This wouldn't surprise me!

I recently discovered this v.92 technology in the process of troubleshooting my computer's hardware compatibility problems, and thought the v.92 sounded pretty cool...unfortunately, i discovered that once the modem's ROM is flashed to the v.92 specifications, there doesn't seem to be a way to revert it back to the old v.90 instructions, but i did find a way to make the modem work...i don't know if it's a fluke or what, but here's what i did to get it to work under v.90 specs:

i was in the process of upgrading my motherboard's bios to a more recent version and reformatting my hd, so maybe this has something to do with it; though i didn't do all that just for the modem. Let me say firstly that the drivers from the original cd that came with the modem won't work, however, download the driver pack from USrobotics and unzip it to a folder C:\Usr

goto the device manager and bring up the modem (the (!)unidentified serial device, that is). reinstall the drivers, only choose to pick from a list of drivers instead of letting windows find it; go under modems, then 3com, then usrobotics 56k fax modem, and have windows install that driver. i've noticed that it installs drivers from a list of drivers in windows, but it also uses a driver from the C:\usr folder (makes a copy of it and puts it in C:\windows\inf)

i'm not sure if it will work for everyone, but it worked for me ;)

I purchased it about 6 weeks ago because my ISP announce v.92 capability and I wanted the ability of faster up loads.

I consistently connect at 49-53 KBaud.

Since that time I have had about half a dozen up loads that have been very fast (8-9 Kilo Bytes/Sec).

All of the rest of the time I am lucky to get 2-3 Kilo Bytes/Sec.

Right after I got my 5610B, I had talked with my My ISP who said there were problems with his 3Comm software.

I am going to talk with him again tomorrow.

Is the 5610B capable of really doing v.92 (faster up loads as promised by v.92)?

If not is there another modem (PCI) that will do the job.

I really need faster upload capability.
