I want to install an external 56K modem to connect to my SMC router. It is to be used for email and ocassional surfing of the web. Can people recommend an external modem. Should I go with the USR v92 modem?

I'd consider a Sportster V.90, perhaps E-bay / used - as you probably won't see any benefit from V.92....

Until all the bugs and interoperability problems get worked out, a V.92 might be more troublesome to set up and get reliable connections....

Wow Sarge - $24 for an external h/w-controller modem...!

I know a lot of people have good luck with the Conexant ACF (I assume that's what this is); and USR has gone extremely downhill especially when it comes to support and 'integrity', but I still like their (older) modems better....

Hi here is another one. http://shop3.outpost.com/product/3028549/ It cost more though.I would not buy it if you are running windows xp,they dont have drivers for xp yet but they said they are making them and gonna post them on their website.I will hopefully get the pci version of their modem.I ll tell how good the modem is.

Yes, I have 2 Express' bought several years ago at $120 each. I also have an older USR external, 00568600 that is more stable. Been using them daily without a hiccup. The Express' seem faster but I often have to cap the max speed. I've tried every modem out there and always return to these.

I use the USR 5686-03 with latest V92 update with no problems. Lots of blinking lights and compact. Very pleased with it.
