Hi all, I have the USR Gaming Modem 3CP5613, I cant seem to find out if they are going to offer the v.92 upgrade for this, USR wont answer...Anyone have any idea on this? Also any chance the upgrade for the 3CP5610 would work on this modem. Thats the performance pro model.

Thx a ton for the info

See http://www.usr.com/v92/v-qualify.asp

If your modem isn't in the list then no V.92 upgrade for now.

Yeah I've seen that, it just seems that the people that may benefit the most from a v.92 upgrade and paid more just for that extra speed boost promised in the gaming modem, are not going to get it.

Is anyone getting an increase or improvement right now using a v.92 modem? Is their ISP v.92 complient? Is it worth buying a v.92 modem right now? I currently have 2 modems installed in my comp and alternate between the 2 for better gaming connection depending on how they happen to connect at the moment. I want faster now!

Well, I upgraded my Performance Pro 5610A (the accursed thing) to V.92 and also got a firmware upgrade that apparently makes it a 5610B.

My ISP does not use V.92, so I am not using any of the features. I seem to have slightly more stability, my throughput and data rates have also slightly improved (my old connection rates were about 28K<->36K, now getting 36K<->43. But, more likely, my little improvement could also be due to my local telco adding some better equipment in my area.

But my ping times still average about the same, as expected. Isn't "ping time" much more important in games than getting slightly more bandwidth (usually)? My guess is that the "gaming modem" was optimized to stream data a little more smoothly than "regular" 56K modems. So, I cannot see how V.92 can do much to improve your gaming beyond what you already have. Plus, you likely won't be "using" V.92 even if you upgrade. Like me, any value is in the firmware update which might happen to slightly improve (or degrade!?) your V.90 connections while all the V.92 code remains dormant.

Thats my 2cents, anyway.

Actually, I use the latest version of Smartplay and connect at 49333 usually. Connection is either stable or not...meaning that it seems that sometimes I get a really solid connect and sometimes not, usually a couple reconnects fix that tho. Smartplay helped my connect tremendously tho and I had tried all the connection tweaks I could DL. I think its at www.smartalec2000.com somewhere. The thing I like about it is that it has to be enabled each time you boot for it to work, so if you dont like it just reboot and its back to default settings.

I guess I'm like all dialup limited ppl, just looking for any way possible to squeeze a little more speed / stability out of these old wires....

to answer your question if your modem will ever be upgraded to the v.92. is no, and the reason i know this is that i work for the company that does support for usr. and you really don't want the downgrade. yes the downgrade, as v.92 does not work, even if your internet provider supports v.92.
do not what ever you do download control center it is the biggest piece of crap. we get alot of calls on this, and we are told to tell the customers to wait for an upgrade we know will never come. i use to think usr was a good product but now i know this isnt true.
like the xp drivers.
