I suddenly can not use my USR 56k PCI hardware modem. It was working fine up until two weeks ago when it suddenly stopped responding. I've figured out that it is on com5 and that the port is already open. I verified that IRQ's are not a problem and that no other programs are running in the background. I've also reinstalled the modem (different pci slot) and the drivers. My old winmodem runs just fine. At this point I'm leaning towards physical defect with the modem. One thing nags me though, it stopped working one week after moving into a newly constructed home using cat5 wiring. Also, I just had satellite installed. Could the cat5 wiring, or the satellite being plugged into the phone lines have anything to do with it? Any ideas?

What OS?

Can you access the modem in the Control Panel, Modems, Diagnostics?

Other devices connected to the phone line wouldn't affect the com port the modem is on.

OS is W98. Using CP, Modem, Diag, is how I found out it was an open port error. The message box "Port Already Open" appears. I checked with my wife and she loaded some children's games just prior to this happening. I believe they were some older games (W95) so maybe one of them changed a setting. I found some information on how to change registry settings so that the modem uses a different com port. Maybe I'll try that. The USR website seems to indicate that my modem will always install on com5 so I think I'll try switching it to com3 through the registry. What do you think?

Might try rebuilding the telephon.ini to see if that helps.

See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q120221

In the Device Manager, double click on Computer in the list, see if any other devices may be using the same IRQ as the modem. Might also check the modem's resoures (Input/Output range) and check to see if any other device is using the same resources.

Also double check to be sure that there's no voice/fax or caller ID software loaded at startup or running in the background. Might also check to be sure that the 'Dial-Up Server' isn't set to 'Allow caller access'.
