Look in Control Panel.

Double click 'System', and see if modem is listed.

Double click modem to open it, then delete whatever is inside.

Close down the System dialogue box.

Now, looking again inside Control Panel, double click on modem.

This will start the modem installation wizard.

During the installation, select a default modem instead of using any installtion diskettes that came with the modem.

Then select the COM port you wish to use and finish the installation. This is what I did when I tried to change the port setting from COM3 to COM2 on my PC. I ended up with two configurations in the modem properties sheet, one for COM2 and one for COM3.

Try it, what have you to lose?

If you have a USR Winmodem, you need the driver disk / file for it. It does not come with Windows.
