I have an external 3Com USR 56k modem hanging off a server running Small Business Server (NT4.) It sits there waiting for our one or two homeworkers to dial-in (to check e-mail, browse internal web site (Intranet), transfer the odd file, etc. Connection is usually about 32k - which is satisfactory for purpose - but every now and then the connection drops back and seems to lock at 2400. The system then remains stuck at 2400 for the next person dialing in and the only way to reset seems to be to reboot the server.

I've read in other messages on Forum 56 about modems 'retraining.' Is this something to do with it? If so, is there a way the modem (or the port?) can be forced to "reset" after the connection has been dropped?

If anyone can throw any light on what might be happening then I would be most grateful.

Regards
Rob

Instead of rebooting the server, try power off / back on the Sportster. Does rate then go back up?

The solution to the problem may be related to initialization string, the stored settings in the modem, and the initialization/re-initialization strings given to the modem by DUNs/Remote Access.

Aloha! Richard.

Thanks, Richard, but have already tried re-powering the modem but it made no odds. Anyone suggest what such a re-initialization string might be?

What I would suggest is experimentation with settings involving when the modem gets reset (DTR control); the switch settings on the modem; and perhaps saving a custom configuration.

You might also try ending the RAS service, then connecting to the modem with Hyperterminal and examining the configuration (at i6) and compare it to the results you get after boot but before any remote session.

The modem should be set so that the DTE (rate from modem to computer) stays the same (57.6 or 115.2k) irrespective of the rate the modem connects at, and as long as this is the case, the modem should be capable of making the highest possible connect on every call.

Also, look at/post the modem log.

Aloha! Richard.
