A while back i wa trying to tweak out a modem i was using at the time, and came across an article about turning you residental modem into a business modem... It showed how to make your com rate go from 115000 to 230000 and show up on the toolbar under your modem properties...
does anyone know whre to locate this article on speed or do you know how to do it?
I do remember having to do some registery editing, but forget exactly where it was in the reg to do this

any help?
Bob u the man?

Don't know about changing a "residential" modem to a "business" modem, didn't know there was a difference except for the message memory modems, but you might look at:

thanks bob,, that is exactly what i read about on the other site i was sent to a while back but that is what i was talking about!!

One more thing i hope you can explain. I am using a usr5610a modem and was just messing around the other day and tried to tweak out my tcp/ip.. i added microsoft compression somehow and when i test my speed at this dite only? http://web.tampabay.rr.com/giis/
i continue to get speeds @ 42.k bytes to 46. k bytes/sec and around 380 kbits/sec?
Any reason i would be getting that kind of performance with said modem?

Have you enabled software compression in DUN's Server Types configuration window?

If not, then this would mean that your modem's "UART" is emulating a port rate much higher than the standard 115200bps.

I'm still using Win95, so I don't know where the s/w or "Microsoft" compression settings are accessed in later OS'es. However, in Win95 do the following:

My Computer
Dial-Up Networking
r-click your ISP
Properties
Server Types
Enable software compression

yes that is where it is and it is enabled.
just uninstalled and reinstalled modem and software and the same site i refer to i am gettting rates up to 52.0 now..

Is there any settings that i can tweak to make my regular downloads go faster than 4.7 to 5.0? Or is this limited to the site's i am downloading from?

Much of your regular downloads would consist of compressed files such as ZIPs, GIFs, and JPGs. These cannot be compressed any further by your modem. OTOH, text based content such as HTML code, newsgroup postings, and the postings to this forum can usually be compressed by a factor of 2.
