I have a Pentium Pro 200. It looks rather old. It's 200 Mhz and I am trying to beef it up. I have a series of questions for anyone out there with experience. First of all I was told that I could install a 500 AMD K-6 Motherboard into the system. Is this the very best for the Pentium Pro 200? I was on ebay and saw other types as well. I am going to purchase one real soon, like the end of the auction. Could anyone tell me what is the very best for this system and what is the very best CPU to use as well? Does the 550 represent 550 Mhz? Just help me out please. I want to buy the best. Also keep checking back regularly for my questions that need answering. I'm new with computers and I guess you would call me a dummy. Help a guy out huh.

I don't know the costs involved, but personally, I would suggest you consider leaving the computer as is till you're ready for a new one.

Upgrading the processor alone may not make a very big difference in performance; and the speed of a processor is misleading in the first place. (It's getting ridiculous - doubling the speed of the processor makes only a marginal difference in performance for most things.)

Other things that affect the speed of your system include the hard drive & its interface; the type, quantity, speed and architecture of the RAM; the speed of the bus; the video card, etc. To really tweak your old machine, you need to replace everything, and that's probably going to cost more than buying a brand new machine....

To put this msg in context - I'm placing the original Post from 'Other' Forum (thread closed) here:

I have a 200Mhz Pentium Pro 200 System. I was told that the cpu could not be upgraded and so I'm working with the systems power alone. Anyway I am buying all of the cards myself though I need a book on repairing the system. Anyway given the fact of what type of system it is, can you tell me what would be the very best sound card, graphics card, and USB card? This is my first experience with computers and I don't know anything about them at all. If you also know where I can buy a repair book on this particular model please tell. I know this is a modem message board but I had nowhere else to turn. I apologize if this appear to be stupid but I just had to know. Please reply and I will read everything.

By way of further reply - if you're going to upgrade the CPU, why not replace the entire motherboard and get a PIII or equiv or higher processor running at 800 or more mhz?

But, if you're determined - and you seem to be - you'll find plenty of help in some other forums that focus on the kind of things you're doing (ie, search the net for overclocking sites, etc.) The only advice I can give you is that I wouldn't do what you want to do, so I can't give you advice on how to do it.

Aloha! Richard.

I'm buying all of the parts from ebay. I have a new motherboard lined up so I'm really not worried about price. The manufacturer is I think First Computer Sytems. I have everything except video card, sound card etc. I don't know anything about internal memory but every other slot is empty. I do have a cd drive, and a disk drive. One other thing that I can tell you is that the power supply port is has 2 outlets for different cords. Male and female (don't laugh I know it sounds old) but it's just sort of something to do because I can get the parts at a reasonable price I just need to know what type would be best for the PP200?
For instance can it take other powerful motherboards?
Or shoul I buy an entirely different tower (empty) and build from scratch? I just basicly want oppinions.
