this modem throws my computer into a hard lock at random times - sometimes as the modem is dialing the ISP, other times after being online for over an hour. it doesn't matter what other programs are running at the time because generally nothing but I.E. is (and i've upgraded that, thinking that would help the issue).

I Have... Asus A7S-VM board w/ AMD Athlon T-Bird 900MHz, 256mb SDRAM and Windows98 SE. I have tried this already...
-switched PCI slots
-disabled PCI IRQ Steering (which was pointless because windows could not enable my modem until i turned it back on)
-manually assigned IRQs to my devices
-reinstalled Windows98 SE
-reinstalled modem + drivers (several times)
-switched phone lines
-disabled com ports
-assigned IRQs to BIOS
-upgraded I.E. from 5.0 to 5.5 SP2

none of this worked. apparently you can't really troubleshoot winmodems very well; either they work or they don't. the interesting thing with this problem, though, was that I had a Zoom 56K modem before this that gave me the same exact problems. in fact, i returned it for a brand new one and that one did the same. so, the fact that three separate modems all gave me the same issue confuses me (because i know my board is fine, and with a reinstall of windows os, it's hard to believe it's a windows issue). do i just need a new modem? any other suggestions? lately it's been acting a tiny bit better but you can imagine how frustrating it is not to know when your computer is going to randomly freeze up.

Try this, see if it helps:

(1) Right click on 'My Computer' and select 'Properties', on the System Properties sheet select the 'Performance' tab, click the the 'Graphics' button and set the 'Hardware acceleration' to one knotch above None. Click OK on everything.

(2) In the Control Panel, double click on Mouse, select the 'Motion' tab and set the 'Pointer speed' to Slow.

Really sounds like the problem is in Windows or DUN and not the modem, could possibly be video related.

thanks for the tips, i'm trying that right now. lately i've been able to stay connected without a freeze longer than before so it may take some time to determine if this is working or not. but eventually we'll find out. again, thanks, i'll keep you posted.

nope, didn't work. this morning my computer froze immediately, just as it started dialing into the isp. i'm on now, but it will undoubtedly freeze again. any other ideas? my BIOS is at the latest version so i can't do anything motherboard-wise.

Have you check the device manager in safe mode? Check all hardware for more than on entry.Set display settings to 16 bit high color also. Before connecting to the net hit ctrl, alt, delete and close all program thjat you do not need running in the background.Do not close explore, systemtray. Please post a modem log also.

You might also disable or put never in all power management listing and disable task scheduled.I would also go to system information, tools, system config, startup and see what windows is starting up on boot.

When was the last time you run ScanDisk?

In the Device Manager, double click on Computer in the list, check for any potential conflicts such as modem and video or soundcard using the same IRQ.

Try uninstalling and re-installing Dial-Up Networking in the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup under Communications. Uncheck Dial-Up Networking, reboot, recheck Dial-Up Networking, reboot, then try a connection.

bob, actually the bulk of the 3 weeks spent trying to fix this has been rearranging my IRQ settings and devices. no combination thus far has worked. charles, so far, has given the best suggestion in lowering my video drivers to 16bit - so far, so good. haven't crashed yet. however, i haven't tested it out thoroughly enough so i'm still not positive if this will solve it (and knowing how much i've tried already, i'm still skeptical). if i end up crashing again, i'll go ahead and reinstall dial-up networking, and if i encounter yet more problems, i'll post a modemlog so you guys can check that out. thanks again.
