Other connection from same phone line in house (an internal 56Kmodem on an iMac) works fine. I hear the connection sound. The activity log says it is connected. Fails to actually find any URLS (including my home page) or to download mail into POP-Eudora. Fails repeatedly since Jan 21 and worked fine for at least a couple of years unitl Jan 04. Thanks in advance. Should I just buy a new modem? |
Bob Starnes Tl Posts: 4360 USA | Posted - 1/29/2002 8:20:36 PM If the modem connects to the ISP but you just can't browse or download anything then it's not a modem problem. I'm not familar with the Mac so I'm not sure what to tell you but your problem lies in the dialup and/or networking setup. |
WingsOverVA Tl Posts: 5 USA | Posted - 1/29/2002 8:43:30 PM I'm no expert, but recently I couldn't access various sites, including C2It. I called Citibank to inquire why, I could access the Citibank page but not the C2It even through the link on Citibank's page. When I told the CS rep, he had me reset my security settings to low and apply, then reset to medium and apply, and now all is well again. He was also going to have me delete all temp internet files but I told him I had already tried that. |
mike75 Tl Posts: 3 Italy | Posted - 1/30/2002 2:57:33 AM Hello, I have a problem like you with my model USR 56K. The connection is ok but i can't browse the net. I have on my PC both WIN98 & LINUX and this problem happens only with Linux. However all was Ok until a few days ago... Mike. |

craig Tl Posts: 3 USA | Posted - 1/30/2002 7:07:03 AM My 56K modem does not connect to ANY URL at any time. The other computer in my house connects fine (with the normal occaisional failure). In an futile effort to fix the problem, I played with the pins on the back of the modem, and now dug myself in deeper (does anyone know the correct settings?) I plan to buy a new modem and see if that helps. |
Bob Starnes Tl Posts: 4360 USA | Posted - 1/30/2002 3:55:35 PM The modem doesn't connect to URLs, it only connects to the ISP's modem and transfers data. Again, it's not a modem problem, you'll most likely have the same problem with another modem. Sorta like blaming the telephone because the guy on the other end isn't talking or isn't speaking the same language that you are. |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 1/30/2002 9:42:42 PM See if putting an IP address in the browser works - which would tell you 100% for sure it's not a modem problem - like instead of url, use http://207.5.16.120 Aloha! Richard. |
craig Tl Posts: 3 USA | Posted - 1/31/2002 6:14:55 AM Thanks -- I called the ISP -- they gave me some new settings and it all works again -- thanks .
