Maybe this explains why USR modems don't support the V.44 protocol? Another "new" technology... more "upgrades"... more expense. I feel sick. I'd like to get off now!

Kind of confusing.
USR, which was an independent company before 3Com purchased them, became an independent company again;

So, 3Com has PC-Card modem/lan adapter; so does USR;
Apparently, 3Com has been selling these PC Cards with a promise of V.92/V.44 'someday' for a year more or less;

The "new technology" in the beta program is 'old' V.92/V.44 as far as I can tell. So far, USR hasn't done anything I know of to support V.44....

Aloha! Richard.
