Chloe50621 Tl Posts: 28 USA | Posted - 2/2/2002 3:56:18 PM Hi, I have a Win.98se emachines computer. An External USR Robotics 56K Faxmodem Model #5686. I was connecting at 36,000 (I know isn't great but as good as I have ever gotten) I downloaded the update for the modem through the Control Center & now I can only connect at 28,800. How can I get it to connect better? It also now makes a new squealing noise when it tries connect. How can I get it back to the other update that worked better? |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 2/2/2002 4:14:22 PM The short answer - you cannot get it back. www.modemsite.com/56k/flashback.asp USR does not provide a way for you to get the old firmware and flash it back. You might be able to improve performance with the version you're stuck with using init strings - I'd start with disabling V.92.... Aloha! Richard. |
Chloe50621 Tl Posts: 28 USA | Posted - 2/2/2002 6:37:45 PM Thanks Richard, I will try it. I was wondering often are you supposed to update the modem? just when it is acting up or every month, etc?? Thanks,Chloe |
SARGE Tl Posts: 743 USA | Posted - 2/2/2002 8:49:22 PM I've got several USR modems that I've used for years, and never did any "updates", much less every month. All perform perfectly (for 56k). Lucent provides the opportunity to "update" frequently, a nice selling point for them. |

Troubled_user Tl Posts: 263 USA | Posted - 3/2/2002 9:38:52 PM ahh, but there IS a way to flashback a 5686. use a browser to go to ftp://totalservice.usr.com' Target='blank'>ftp://totalservice.usr.com (the ftp:// part is REQUIRED) then, it should bring up an error that says something about no anonymous logins. Using Internet Explorer, right-click the empty white space in the center of the screen and choose "Login As...". Use the name usr568603 and password usr568603 You should now see a whole bunch of xxxx5686x_x_x.dmf files Choose the one that you want, and then drag it to your desktop. AFter doing so, disconnect and use ControlCenter. Choose Flash from Disk. browse to your desktop and choose that flash file. |
pauldog Tl Posts: 231 USA | Posted - 3/2/2002 11:06:02 PM Hey, maybe I'll be able to find other dmf's that way... |
pauldog Tl Posts: 231 USA | Posted - 3/5/2002 9:28:07 PM I couldn't find any other logins. By the way, where do you get the software to flash the modem from a .dmf file? Here's a USR download area for self-installing flash files, but I think they only have the last flashes offered: |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 3/6/2002 12:11:45 AM Doesn't Control Center let you flash with a dmf file? Aloha! Richard. |
Troubled_user Tl Posts: 263 USA | Posted - 3/6/2002 7:11:13 AM Yes, there's a "Flash from Disk" option in ControlCenter, which takes DMF files |
