I just bought a 56K USR PCI Winmodem. I uninstalled my previous 33K USR ISA Sportster Winmodem and when I re-boot, if I touch my mouse, my system locks up, no keyboard, no mouse! I removed the PCI modem, ran the USR winmodem uninstall prog. re-installed the PCI winmodem and still the mouse freeze occurs. I tried everything, even uninstalling the COM1 & COM2 ports, as well as the moused drivers, then re-intalling the mouse, then the 56K PCI Winmodem. Still the freeze.
The strange thing, is, if I re-insert the ISA winmodem along with the PCI one, everything works fine !!! As long as I keep the ISA winmodem in it's slot, (and press Cancel when Win98 wants to istall it's drivers after every re-boot) all works. As soon as I remove the ISA Winmodem, FREEZE (as soon as I touch the mouse). I really would like to remove the old ISA Winmodem, so I have a clean machine. Any Suggestions??
Thanks
Joe.

What kind of mouse do you have & is it connected to a COM or 'Mouse' port?

Because a Winmodem creates a 'virtual' COM port, when you remove one, the COM ports available on your machine change once Windows boots; There are some known problems involving the un-install of at least some USR Winmodems.

It appears your problem is with the removal of the old modem: if you have no modem installed in your system, the mouse freezes? I would suggest booting into Safe Mode with all modems removed, then look at your Control Panel->System for resource conflicts. You might also try regular mode boot with the mouse unplugged, then go to CP->System to examine conflicts.

I would also suggest MS Reg Clean (on my links page as well as some Win98/Winmodem install/uninstall related info at www.808news.com/56k/links.htm ); although I doubt it will fix this problem.

In addition to removing modem, you could try removing networking/dial-up networking components.

There may be a registry-related problem.
A re-install of Windows over existing install might help.

Aloha,
Richard

I have a Cirque Glidepoint PS/2 mouse. The system freezes whether I have the 56K PCI Winmodem in or not. As long as the ISA winmodem is out, It freezes. I figure the system is still trying to access a COM port for the missing ISA Wmodem, and when it cant find the modem, it grabs the COM port for the mouse?? I know I should have uninstalled the ISA modem before physically removing it . Your probobaly right that some eronious registry entries remain. I thought I killed them all when I ran the 3com uninstall after. I'm gonna try to run Norton Utilities Registry Cleaner, and see if that helps. Thanks

Richard, I forgot to mention, that when I remove the ISA Wmodem and re-boot to normal mode (I avoid the mouse and use only the keyboard), I then check the System dialog, and the mouse shows up as 'no resource conflicts', nothing in the hardware listing shows up as having any kind of conflict at all!! Then if I touch the mouse, LOCKUP!!

SUCCESS!!

Through trial & error, I figured out that Win98 SE PnP will allocate the PS/2 mouse to IRQ 10 if no ISA slots are occupied. I don't know why that is?? The Bios settings indicated that IRQ12 is to be reserved for PS/2 mouse. So I forced windows (through the System dialog) to allocate IRQ12 to the PS/2 mouse, then rebooted and VOILA!, mouse worked!!.

Hope it helps somebody else.

Joe
