I need to buy an internal controller-based USR internal modem. I have read of many V.92 interoperability issues, and Richard's recommendation not to buy....but I need to get a new USR to replace my fried V.90.....

My ISP does not have V.92, and I have no interest in using it. Is there an init string I can use to force V.90. If so, what?

Or does the recommendation not to buy still stand?

Thanks,
-William Mulloy

Avoid the Performance Pro at all costs.

It's an inferior product.

Try looking into a hardware based Zoom modem. They're quite good.

Or you can try getting yourself a used USR Courier modem. You can find them kicking around on Ebay.

I hope this info helps you.

If you want a USR, I'd suggest find a used Sportster V.90 internal faxmodem (like on EBay)....

Aloha! Richard.

I also have an external Zoom modem....it connects slower, 38,000-41,333....and unfortunately, while numbers may not be everything, throughput is not as good as my USR could achieve.

It seems most of the negative reports have to do with V.92. If I could find one of the V.90 performance pros (cdw.com appears to still have them) are they OK?

Thanks again!

Have you tried to disable V90?

wmulloy: what version firmware do you have in the Zoom?
Have you checked/tried a later version?
Also see that latest on the Venus chipset at

Note - anytime you flash a h/w-controller-based modem, there is a risk - the flash must complete successfully or the modem is toast.

Charles,

Thanks! I never thought of disabling V.90. As a result, I now get a consistent 44,000 connection. And I am not being fooled by a higher CONNECT speed....the throughput is extraordinarily improved....and this was tested on 2 different ISP's, with 3 different types of ISP equipment.

Richard,

Thanks also for your input. My firmware version is dated 52099, the latest listed for my model. I am hesitant to update it, for the very reason you mention. With disabling V.90, things are much better.

Incidentally....since this IS the USR board.....Per your (and many others') advice, I will not be getting the USR Performance Pro. if I wanted to get a replacement USR, I was also looking at the 3Com 3CP3294 "OfficeConnect 56K External Business Modem V.90" Do you have any experience with this model? It is, of course, a HW controller-based modem. At $149, it's looking VERY attractive as a backup solution. Also, is it still safe to assume a 56K Courier v.Everything is still an expensive but rock-solid choice? Thanks again!

How do you get a 44K connect without V90?

I disabled V.90, leaving the modem to connect using k56flex, which is an earlier 56K protocol. My lines seem to be able to tolerate it better than V.90 for some strange reason.
