I replaced my burnt out modem with a 3Com US Robotics modem recently. Now whenever I connect my modem to my phone socket, my dial tone on my phone goes dead. I know the socket is working because I can connect my Laptop Lucent Winmodem to it and it connects fine. I need to know why it isnt working! I have tried all hyperterminal codes (ati6i11y11) and it tells me nothing ie everything is 0.
any suggestions?

My first guess: the modem is defective.
(USR is having trouble with it's solid-state DAA design. The DAA is responsible for on/off-hook control.)

Aloha! Richard.

ok well i actually got my modem working last night! i was really surprised that it worked. only thing is, its not working now. when i try to go online, it opens the modem port and all i hear is a busy signal. this means that the modem is working right? but there is something wrong somewhere...

If the modem goes off-hook when power is applied to the computer; and, if you boot up and immediately try to use the modem - the phone line might actually be giving you a 'busy' signal (depends upon telco, but try picking up your phone line, don't dial anything, and see what happens as you wait for dial tone to change to something else.

If this is the case, the modem is defective, but you might be able to use it if you unplug the phone cord and wait until you're ready to use it to plug it in; if this works, you'll have to unplug the cord when you're done as the modem won't 'hang-up'.

Aloha! Richard.
