ok no mattre what I cannot get this bugger to install. it detects as pci simple communications controller. XP will not load the usr drivers for it. I guees xp will not let me force a driver for hardware. I'm stumped I cannot get this pile of crap working in xp pro. It worked under win2k and I tried it again on my other box(win98) no probs.
Any tricks out there.I'd hate to dump winxp for a modemm or dump a modem for XP?
I have tried every driver I could find. I also tried my motorola sm56 works fine. It was DETECTED as a pci simple com controller also but it loaded the drivers from cd? it worked sorta( I have had probs with this one thats why I have the usr now)
any ideas?

This is from another modem but should work for the usr.

. Download the driver (for Win 2000 or xp and expand it in a folder
2. Start the "Control Panel"
3. Click on "Classic View"
4. Select "System" -> "Hardware" -> "Device manager" -> "Modem" -> "Soft56K" Modem
5. Select the "properties"
6. Select "drivers" -> "Update Driver"
7. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" -> "Next"
8. Select "Don't Search. I'll choose the driver to install". -> "Next"
9. Select "Have Disk" and locate the new driver's location
10. Select the correct model and click "Next", then follows Windows instruction
11. During the installation, Windows will give a warning that the driver does passed the Windows Logo test, select "Continue Anyway" and then follow Windows' instruction.

The problem may be that XP is not using or finding the correct driver for the modem - and it might be related to the prior installations of other modems.

I would try things like - disabling the PCI simple controller in ControlPanel->System-> Device Manager; reboot, then try and add new hardware using the advanced/have disk method;
Make sure that all prior modem installations have been removed - no modems listed in 'modems' in control panel, and remove any modem-related entry in 'add/remove software';
And if all that doesn't work, I'd try to locate and remove .inf files related to other modem install attempts;

Aloha! Richard.
