My usr 56k external faxmodem has begun to hang when dialing my isp. It originally worked fine and gave me connect speed of 31200, which is great for my backwoods area. Now,it dials out OK as checked by USR techs on line, but simply hangs during handshake with my isp. I uninstalled all software and the modem and re-installed an old Lucent winmodem and all is well with isp connection. I even tried to re-install the USR after all that and got the same results. Went back to winmodem - OK. My system is HP 8575 PIII, 256 ram and Win98se.I'm preparing at the moment to install it on another pc to see what happens.
Thanks very much,
jc

Addendum to "5686d lost protocol"
Modem does the same thing on another pc when dialing my isp (localnet.com), but will connect by way of a local school system's internet access number. ??

Below is log indicating "no carrier" failure:

Thanks for any help,
jc

Try adding +MS=V34 in extra setting.

Charles:
Thanks for the reply. I tried your suggestion and modem locked up, but then tried S32=66 to disable V.90 and all seems well. I'm on an old MMX now with the USR connected at 28.8 and out here on Billy Bob's Phone Line, that's about par. I hope it will increase to 33.6 or so on the PIII.
Thanks for your input and thanks to Forum 56 for a life saver site - lots of great info here and on Modemsite. Definite bookmarks for these two.
Have a great weekend,
jc

WARNING:: Do NOT believe ANYONE about using the "+MS" commands for US robotics modems. They DO NOT work. It will just say "error" or refuse to dial. US robotics doesn't support the V.250 modulation select commands. Use the s32 register.
