I've recently bought a USR 5686-D "external v.92 faxmodem" and i have realized that USR has completely changed from the near-perfect modem to the worst piece of CRAP. Its connect rates are OK, but the "Control Center" controls absolutely NOTHING, and I want to use either V.34 or X2 because frankly there are certain interoperability issues in V90 and V92. I have been trying to figure out how to enable X2, but with NO success. The +MS commands are not supported, the Ats$ gives some help, stating that S32=64 means Disable V90. I tried this command, but just like every other S32 command listed, it gives me a V32 14400 handshake. I used to own a US robotics X2 modem, which worked perfectly with 52000 connects, but after I moved it gave me 45333. After a flashing "mishap", the modem is now my primary paperweight.......

Am I the only person with this view on US robotics, or is there something that I'm doing wrong?????

You might be able to get a replacement for the modem that was damaged from flashing. It's worth a try...

There does seem to be a consensus that USR's quality has gone downhill. I've found that their customer service can't answer a lot of questions any mopre about their older, reliable modems.

And Control Center is dangerous - I just discovered that when I uninstalled it, it tried to delete shared .DLL's, etc., that were from other software!

I've tried contacting them in EVERY way. I called tech support, and I kept the speakerphone on from 7AM to 4PM with nobody answering. I tried e-mailing them, but all I get are messages that say either "We're sorry, but V92 upgrades are not issued for your modem" or "If you are having trouble connecting :: ... Please check that your modem is plugged in to the power socket ......" and worst of all, it's an Internal modem!!!
