pauldog Tl Posts: 231 USA | Posted - 3/3/2002 5:47:25 PM I tried reinstalling my used 00112503 Winmodem with an unusual driver I got by using the Modem Update Wizard. This driver doesn't match any of the drivers you can get from the USR website. The driver suggested on the website is the 33.6K one, but this other driver may have connected at 56K briefly, I can't remember for sure now. Back to the reinstall (I had pulled it out a month or two ago, and ran WMREGDEL.EXE to make sure it uninstalled cleanly - there is no trace of the modem in the registry). I ran the UPDATE.EXE file, but it failed with a cryptic error message - dialog box, yellow triangle with exclamation point, all it said in the box was CLEANWM. I know that this is the name of a program in the installer, with an icon that says "MFC" (Microsoft Foundation Classes). The modem didn't install, and there was nothing in the registry. Anybody know what this is about? Recently, I installed new versions of the Visual C++ and Visual Basic runtime libraries. Could this be related? |

pauldog Tl Posts: 231 USA | Posted - 3/3/2002 11:32:56 PM I have that driver, too, but what's the fun of that one if the other one (which came from the Modem Update Wizard, not some hacker site) might get V.90? Now, the question of where that mystery driver came from is a good question, especially since on the previous install a couple of months ago, it worked. |
pauldog Tl Posts: 231 USA | Posted - 3/3/2002 11:52:42 PM I should say more about the driver. The WINMODEM.VXD file is version 2.60.003. The only other place I've seen this version mentioned is Packard Bell's European Winstorm modem. I would think that European drivers wouldn't help, different phone connections, etc., though I have no experience with this. I haven't seen the CLEANWM.EXE file in any other Winmodem driver I downloaded, and I have bunch now, out of curiosity. So if anyone needs one in the future, when USR might abandon even more support, I've got a sort of repository. |
Bob Starnes Tl Posts: 4360 USA | Posted - 3/4/2002 12:41:39 PM There's a reference to your "CLEAMWM" message at Gateway's site but it's a bad link, see the bottom of the page at: http://www.gateway.com/support/product/components/modem/modisa007aaus.shtml

pauldog Tl Posts: 231 USA | Posted - 3/5/2002 10:12:01 PM The only reference I could find was on this page, and it was no help, either: http://www11.ewebcity.com/binojantony/issue.htm I decided to sell it on eBay as an experimenter's special. Maybe someone will pick it up for a few bucks, and my closet will be 3 oz. lighter. I'm inclining toward just working with the Lucent PCI winmodems, the (older reliable) USR external V.90 modems, and PCI hardware modems. Many are available on eBay for not much money, and they are easy to work with and work well. The novelty of trying to get weirder modems than those to work is gone... |
pauldog Tl Posts: 231 USA | Posted - 3/18/2002 11:12:38 PM And I forgot to mention one thing - the winm336.exe driver won't install on my Win98SE computer - it gives an error message about not able to be installed on my sytem. That leaves the mystey driver from the USR wizard. It is amazing how bad USR's customer service has been about this. They keep cycling me through the same useless answers each time I tell them they haven't been any help yet. |
