This is a USR PCI Fax modem(OEM) installed under Win98. Installs fine with provided driver, works fine UNTIL the computer is rebooted-then, under control panel>modem>diagnostics>more info I get the port already open message. Uninstalling or removing the modem, then rebooting-having windows recognize new PCI communications hardware, and providing the driver floppy again, again installs the modem successfully, and the modem connects to the ISP just fine. It connects, disconnects, reconnects fine until I shut the computer down again. Rebooting causes the same port already open message. The modem is installed on Com5 IRQ 15. This is actually a friend's computer with an ASUS mb
an AMD Athlon 900mhz, onboard sound and SCSI controller.
Any suggestions? Thanks,
Vic

Hi,
I'm almost positive it is a Via based MB-chipset: 133A, I think.
As for the model of the modem, it would be some OEM number, not the traditional USR type. One unusual thing about this modem: the card "feels" like it is made of metal, rather than the regular PCB I'm accustomed to seeing. It is a PCI fax modem-no voice, no other connectors except for the line/phone jacks.
Thanks,
Vic

Look on the modem board and post all numbers found please.Usr has OEM drivers on it's site. Also might check the motherboard site for any bios updates. When you get port already open, click ctrl, alt, delete and see what is listed in the background.Look for fax or other software that may access the modem.Try to end task all and if Rnaapp is listed end task it also.Try to access the modem again.Modem is on Com5 IRQ 15.Try puting the modem on another com port or try modem in another slot in pc.

Hi Charles,
Thank you for the tips. Will do. The computer belongs to a co-worker, and, for now, she seems content to keep the computer on continuously-which circumvents the problem.
I will continue to attempt a more definitive solution.
Thank you for your kind and continued attention.

If the motherboard does use the VIA chipset then make sure she has the latest 4-in-1 drivers loaded. These should be available from the motherboard manufacturer's website or ViaTech's site.

Hi,
Thanks again. I wish now that I had the computer in front of me. You are most kind to try and help. My coworker seems satisfied with her situation for now. I won't impose any fixes on her household, but, if she requests,I'll go and try and correct her problem. I have filed your suggestions away, and will see what develops.
Thanks again.
Vic
