I've got an old USR Sportster 5686-03 and want to use the Modem on Hold feature of v.92.

My ISP says they now have v.92 working.

I've got call waiting on my phone line , and upgraded my modem (I had to install a balky program called something like "Control Center" to do the upgrade).

So now how do I get the call waiting to work?

But it took my ISP nearly a year

To get V.92 MOH to work, you have to get yet another program: ICN (internet call notification)

ftp://ftp.usr.com/usr/v92/ICN_2.01.17.exe

Thanks for that tip!

I downloaded and tried to install ICN (internet call notification) but got an error message telling me my modem didn't support V.92.

Back in August of last year I did install the V.92 upgrade to my 5886-03 modem, but I seem to recall having some kind of problems with Control Center crashing my system because it was running some nasty little program in the background.

And I think I may have killed that program. Could I have also wiped out my V.92 upgrade?

Maybe I should just go back to square one and start over.

Do you know where I can find step-by-step instructions for upgrading my modem so it will work with the new V.92 protocol on my ISP?

I'm trying to update my USR 5686-03 to V.92 by following the instructions at:

http://www.usr.com/v92/v-upgrade.asp?patch=5686

Step 2 says to "Log off the Internet."

Step 6 says to: "Click the Instant Update button"

When I click the "Instant Update" button I get this message:

Instant Update
--------------
Failed to Download Version Information
from Update Site

My modem is turned on.

What am I doing wrong?

I figured out why the "Instant Update" wasn't working. It turns out there were some hidden settings for the D.U.N. connection that had to be configured.

Once I got that fixed, the update seemed to go OK. At least I got a message saying the update was successful.

But now I've run into a problem trying to update the modem driver.

The instructions I got in a text file when I updated the modem say I have to install a new driver following these steps:

****************
Windows 95 Users
****************

- To upgrade the modem driver, right click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop and click "Properties". - Click the "Device Manager" tab and double-click "Modems". - Double-click the modem that you just upgraded and select the "Driver" tab.

I got as far as double clicking my modem, but I don't see a "Driver" tab.

I only see three tabs:

General / Modem / Connection

But no "Driver."

Where is this driver tab to be found?

Try this method:

1. open up Internet Explorer and type in the following link:
Ftp://usr568603:usr568603@totalservice.usr.com/

2. Looking at all the files that pop up, select the only file with an .INF ending. (It looks like a text file icon with a gold colored gear in the corner) I think the name is "568603.inf"

3. Drag that file to your desktop. Wait for the downloading.

4. Disconnect. Go to Device Manager and uninstall the modem. (highlight it and hit Remove)

5. Reboot, but leave the modem on. When Windows comes back, you should get a dialog about some new device.

6. Tell the wizard that "I'd like to locate the driver" or something like that. Choose the option OTHER than the one that says something about automatic install.

7. Type in "C:\Windows\Desktop\xxxxxx.inf" where xxxxxx is the name of the file that you downloaded (should be 568603)

8. Hit next and it should install

I followed your instructions, i.e., I deleted my modem installation, and then rebooted. But Windows booted normally and didn't ask me if I wanted to install the modem.

So I went through the Windows 95 Control Panel and double clicked on Modem but I think it did an automatic install. So I tried it again and used the browse option to select the 00568093.inf file from My Download folder.

When I got done I ended up with two modems, the second one labeled #2. So I deleted the other one.

Sonow, is there a way I can check to make sure I've got the right driver? I looked in the Windows inf folder, and the 00568603.inf file is not there. I had expected that Windows would have moved it there during the installation (Before trying the installation I renamed the old inf file to 00568603.inf.old so Windows wouldn't try to use that one for the installation.

Look in the INF file. In one of the sections, you should see

"CONNECT XXXXXXX/V90/ARQ" or something like that, where xxxxx is the speed. Notice the /V90/. Look for a section where it says "CONNECT XXXXXX/V92" with the V92

I'm sorry but I'm a little slow on the uptake due to cognitive impairment from a worsening chronic illness. So I have to confess I didn't understand what I'm supposed to do once I find V90 and/or V92 in the .inf file.

lol

Try this instead:

Delete any instances of your INF file in the C:\Windows\INF folder. (Also, look for a mdm3com.inf file and/or mdmusr.inf. These are the windows default INFs for the USR modems). If you are THAT paranoid that you would end up with a non-functioning computer, move the file TO ANOTHER FOLDER!!!

Then, right-mouse click the inf file that you downloaded. Choose Install.

Remove all instances of your modem from Device Manager and reinstall the modem'

Also, what ISP do you use? Many have lied about their V92 support. I.E. MSN and AOL tech support both told me that they supported V92/V44. BULL!!!
