| mbonn108 Tl Posts: 3 USA | Posted - 3/14/2002 7:57:11 AM    Hi, installed lateset driver from USR website on 2977 modem for Windows 2000 and I can communicate with the modem in hyperterminal like at&f1, I get ok. My phone line I am using on another modem just fine. So, I am stuck. I tried installing modem in a different PCI slot since I read that there can be PCI conflict issues. This did not help. The only "sound" that I can hear when I try to dial out is a momentary click, click and the message that it is redialing. Do I have a modem failure? I have a Duron 950 on a KT-EV motherboard with a sound card in a PCI slot, 256 megs RAM. Any ideas? |
| Bob Starnes Tl Posts: 4360 USA | Posted - 3/14/2002 11:55:22 PM Test the modem in Hyperterminal, for setting up Hyperterminal see: http://modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.asp In Hyperterminal do the following: 1. Type AT E1 <hit enter> (E one, entered blindly, allows you to see what you type afterwards) 2. Type AT &F1 M1 L3 <hit enter> 3. Type AT H1 <hit enter> (That's H one) The modem should go offhook and you'll hear the dial tone. 4. Type ATH (the modem will hang up the line) If you didn't hear the dial tone in line 3 then check the phone cord, make sure it's plugged into the LINE jack on the modem or try a different phone cord. Or it's possible the modem may be damaged. 5. Type ATDT XXX-XXXX (XXX-XXXX is the number of the line the modem is on) The modem should dial out and you'll hear a busy signal since the modem is using the line. Hit any key to disconnect. If the modem dialed out ok then the problem is in Windows. If the modem reported NO DIALTONE then either the modem is damaged or set to the wrong country code. |
| mbonn108 Tl Posts: 3 USA | Posted - 3/28/2002 7:41:31 AM Thanks for the reply. I tried your suggestion in hyperterminal and I get no dial tone. I have Windows ME and 2000 installed and in both cases the current driver is installed and the modem diagnostic works fine but in the device manager under com ports it lists no com port for the modem. Windows Me installs the modem in com5 and Windows 2000 under com3 but neither are listed in com ports tree. I read the troubleshooting in Windows and it says that sometimes controllerless modems have to have the com port installed manually and I tried this. Windows ME allows me to do this but Windows 2000 gives me an error. So do I change the registry in Windows ME to switch the modem from com5 to com3? Is something else going on? In the Windows 2000 installation with wizard it gives me no choice on com port selection. I have com1 and Com2 disabled in the bios since they are dedicated to the external ports. |

It is on com3 in Windows 2000 and with hyperterminal I can type AT &F1 M1 L3 and it responds OK. When I type AT H1 it makes a clicking sound but no dial tone and then it responds OK. Then atdt XXX-XXXX it reponds no dial tone. The country code is set for US so according to the diagnostic the modem must be damaged. The phone cord works fine on my laptop's modem and when I plug a phone into the USR modem I can get a dial tone in the phone. Is it damaged?

| Bob Starnes Tl Posts: 4360 USA | Posted - 3/28/2002 6:54:29 PM The modem uses a virtual serial port (com port) and the modem's com port will NOT be listed under PORTS in the Device Manager. The PORTS section is reserved for real hardware serial ports. If you didn't hear the dialtone in the Hypterterminal test when you issued ATH1 then the modem may be damaged. Might check the pins in the LINE jack on the modem to see if they're corroded or bent.
