Help! My 5686D (v.92 external) begins the handshake but then the scratchy noise becomes a high steady pitch and it never connects. Everything was working fine up until about a week ago. It's probably a change by the ISP (Prodigy) or Telco but each is blaming the other.

My setup:
PC(A) - P3/800 WinXP
PC(B) - K6-2/300 Win98

1. Two 5686D's and they're both doing the same thing on both PC's - both DUN and Hyperterminal.

2. An older USR WinModem v.90 on PC(B) has no problems.

3. Strangely when I try a different ISP (Compuserve) with the 5686D's, it connects, but immediately reports incorrect UserName / Password; Again the WinModem has no problems - and yes, I've typed them correctly.

4. I can connect to the USR BBS with the 5686D's with no problem.

Anyone have any ideas? Could this be a v.92 issue?

TIA

High steady pitch: Retrain request pitch. One of your modems is trying to retrain. Try S32=98 for a V34 connect. If that works, then it's a v92 issue

Thanks t_user, you were right. By going to v.34 I get 28.8k connections no problem. I've disabled PCM Upstream, MOH, and QuickConnect and it's now getting 48k connections again. I'm not sure why it all of a sudden started acting up though. Could it be that my ISP started using v.92 and it's not compatible? Or somethings different about the phone connection? I hate to disable the very reason for getting v.92, but at least it's working now.

Did you have a problem installing your 5686D modem? Are you using Windows XP? We can't seem to get this modem to work, and I'm trying to help someone from a distance...not easy! The manual even says to disable call waiting.... that doesn't seem possible to me. I'm thinking that my friend has the wrong manual with the modem! Now the phone will ring on the caller's end, but it doesn't seem to ring threw to the modem. No sound is heard, and nothing comes up on the screen to indicate there's a call! My friend is about ready to pitch the modem, and trying to resolve the problem from long distance is just as fustrating! Any suggestions??? Someone provided 2 files for the drivers, and my friend will try that this weekend. However, she just received the modem....why should this be necessary?

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Mine is working now, and I did not have problems installing it initially (see above). I'm currently running it on a router shared by the two PC's - one of which is XP.

Is she trying to receive a call like pcAnywhere and the AA is not working? Or are you talking about MOH (which I'm not using because of the v.92 issue above)? Does it dial out OK?

If she is wanting to use caller id put #CID=1 in extra settings.
