I cannot conenct to some web sites using the www format.
EX. www.microsoft.com will not get me there. I get a message that says I can't connect - maybe the server is down. If I use the IP address instead of the host name, it will connect me. This happens to a lot, but not all, of the
sites I like to connect to. Very frustrating.I've contacted Microsoft, UsRobotics and my ISP. Nobody has ever heard of such a problem. I have found a site in Australia that will translate the host name into the IP address. But, after the initial connection, I frequently cannot explore the site because any insite link will begin with www. and I won't be able to move. Any help would be appreciated!

I'm using Windows XP Home. I upgraded last week. Prior to that I was using Windows 98. Same problem with both OS.
My daughter's PC uses the same phone line and ISP and does NOT have this problem.

Are you using ZoneAlarm? Seems to have trouble with XP. There is a newer version out, ZAP 3.091. Otherwise try Sygate Free or Outpost Free.

this seems to be a problem with your ISP. Try "borrowing" an ISP from a friend and seeing whether that works.

Speaking of firewalls, as a certified security analyst, I have to say that Sygate and Outpost have numerous security holes, and i would strongly detest using them. Try even the free version of zonealarm.
