dks1025 Tl Posts: 6 USA | Posted - 4/2/2002 7:59:13 AM Hello, I have started playing racing games online and had an Aopen winmodem. I was told I needed to get a good hardware modem. So I did a little research and decided to go with the USR5610B. With my old modem I was consistently connecting at 50.6k. Right off the bat with this modem I was mostly connecting 45.2, sometimes 49.X. The main problem I've had with this modem is last night during gameplay I was knocked off three times. The connection was barely still there, obivously not strong enough to stay in the game. For all I know it could have been my ISP, but I don't really think so and they aren't gonna tell me it is them. I have sent a similar message to US Robotics but I'm not holding my breath on them. Any pointers or help would be greatly appreciated. If anyone can tell me of a better modem please do. I can take this thing back to Staples if I have to. Sorry for the long message, Thank you, David |

charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 4/3/2002 7:10:42 AM If you still want to use the usr modem try S32=98 in extra setting. This will disable X2 and v90 for gaming. What model aopen modem are you using now? Post a modem log also.Have you disabled call waiting? Remove all phone from there jack and are you using any surg device between the modem and phone jack? |

dks1025 Tl Posts: 6 USA | Posted - 4/3/2002 10:23:26 AM Its the Aopen model FM56-SLM http://www.aopen.com/products/modem/fm56slm.htm I'm at work now so I can't post a modem log. I do not have call waiting, no surge between wall & modem, and no other phone plugged into phone jack. Sounds like other people have had problems with the USR5610B. My average connection on it was 45.2K when I reinstalled my Aopen it went back up to 50.6K. Are hardware modems really that much better than winmodems for gaming? I've started playing Nascar 2002 online and would like the best possible connection I can get with my 56K. |
charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 4/3/2002 11:21:26 AM Before I would go buying modems I would learn how they work. You might want to read this page. http://modemsite.com/56k/faster.asp Gaming is hard these days with a k56 modem because so many have DSL or cable modems..Not to worry about connect speed. What you want is a more stable speed. With the PC that you have you should not have a problem with a winmodem. Here is a page with the at commands http://www.aopen.com/tech/download/manual/modem/modem_pci/modem_pci.htm Need to get ready for work, help more later. |
charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 4/3/2002 11:26:24 AM Try +MS=11,1 in extra setting or try this +MS=11,1,300,33600,0,0 http://www.aopen.com/tech/download/manual/modem/modem_pci/aopenslm.pdf
