I have a 3COM 3453 56K external modem and a PCI LT modem with a Hv90P-T Lucent chip and 5.66 driver. I use MSN and My-bluelight as ISP's. The problem is: I only connect at V34 at 31200 or 28800. Result from ATI11 and Y11 are: turn around delay is usually 8 or 9, freq 3300 and 3750 are usually 35-36 and 55. So these would not indicate a problem, right? Using your list of connects, all connected at V34 except IBM and AOL --V.90 status UU,5,12N,12.1,0,2N,0,33.6,34.8. Also AOL X2 Gave V90 status with all same except 0N and 34.1,28.8.
I have tried multiple dial in lines, and both modems to both ISP's. Any ideas? Also, what dos V.90 status of 00EF mean on a V34 connect? There were previously 2 lines into the house, but now only one is active. Is it possible a pair gain box is still on the line? How can I find out? Thanks, Richard

A value of 35-36 for 3300 and
55 for 3750 would indicate your line will not support a 56k connect at all - that you have a very poor line.

"Additionally, if the level reported for 3750 is above 50-55, it may indicate a poor local loop which may prevent or result in poor 56k performance"

You could try removing all other devices from the phone line or connecting directly to the demarc to see if that makes a difference
www.modemsite.com/56k/demarc.asp

and, if it does not, I would disable 56k via modem init string and forget about 56k until/if you get a better phone line.

Aloha! Richard.

Hi again, I downloaded the lucent 8.22 driver for the LT modem and got a V.90 connection. Also connected a USR 5686D and got a V.90 connection. The highest connect rate I get is 38666. This is alot better than the 28.8 connect I was getting before to MSN. I will have to be satisfied with this speed- given the line codition. Thanks for the help and the great info on the site. Richard

Might also check the com port setting in the device manager.I have seen others install a high speed PCI serial port card to take out the bottle neck of the serial port.I like the Lucent PCI with the 1648c chipset.I can turn off the MOH in the system tray with no problem.

The COM port setting for the external modem was set at 9600 bits per second. What should it be set to?

Ihave a PCI serial port installed, but have not tried using it for the modem. I'll try it. Is there a way to determine the hardware speed of a serial port?

Also, I notice in the modem log, I'm getting the message SERIAL OVERRUN ERRORS with a count. What's the significants of this, or where can I find further info?

Thanks, Richard

It should be set to 115.2k bps - or minimum of 57.6k

Thanks, Charles, I'll check out the links.
Thanks Richard, I reset the port speed. The UAT is NS-16550AN and I do not multi-task when using the modem. Will continue to watch overruns. Sometimes is Zero.
Richard.
