I bought a new 2.0ghz intel rambus ram computer that cooks, but win982e with Int. Exp. 6.0 might be my problem. I started with the cheap pctel modem that came with it connecting at 44k. I then tried a diamond supramax 56k connecting at 48k. I used modemsite to decide upon a USR hard modem. It quickly connects regularly at 50666, but like all the others before, I'll finish with one page, click my next choice, (sometimes zooming to the next page), but usually stop and wait indefinitely. I can refresh, back, forward, stop and sometimes joggle a response. Sometimes I need to redial my connection. I've gone to internet options; connections; settings, then clicked OK and many times that will elicit a response from the modem. Once the modem icon on the toolbar lights up it cooks, but it needs to be tickled to get started. Downloads are fast and uninterrupted. What to do? Any genius out there?

Some things to try
(1) create a totally new Connectoid for your ISP connection -
www.modemsite.com/56k/connectoid.asp

(2) If that doesn't help, when you are in the state you describe, open a command window (Start->Run->'command') and use the ping and/or tracert commands to your ISP's homepage as well as to sites you are trying to reach - see
www.modemsite.com/56k/backbone.asp

(3) Examine post-call diagnostics to see if you are getting retrains - which can cause pause of 20 or more seconds for each; use Hyperterminal to get the diagnostics
www.modemsite.com/56k/diag3com.asp
www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.asp

Aloha! Richard.

Post a modem log please. What model modem did you get? Try +MS=V34 ,see if the problem stops.Might need to limit the connect speed.Make sure the modem is on when you boot up. What OS are you using? Make sure modem and port speed is set at 115200.Go to connection, port settings, receive buffer to high.

[b}Thank you Richard and Charles for your responses!
This is a wonderful site (modemsite and the Forum56). Everything I know about modems has come from you!
Richard I had tried all the connectoid changes you mentioned except for appending the modem log. That already helped me tonight because when my ISP dumped me for about 20 minutes, I was able to see that reason listed in the appended log instead of lowering DTR. I'd never known about pinging or tracert commands. Both looked healthy as far as my brain perceives. I'll paste the results of the log, ping, tracert, and control center blears. Charles, I have tried your suggestions. My modem is listed in the log you asked for. I had mentioned Win982e for my OS. Could you folks let me know if you see anything unusual?! Thanks again!

Thanks for your help!

From what I see there is no problem with the connection or your isp.
Minimum = 158ms, Maximum = 191ms, Average = 174ms anything under 200 is very good.

If you had the same problem with another modem I would think it is the PC.Try AT&V in hyperterm to check modem setup.

Does the computer have a network adapter (NIC / LAN card?)
If it does and you are not using a LAN, remove/disable the NIC in ControlPanel->System.

Aloha! Richard.

Thank you!
Richard, I think you put your finger on it! My new computer came with an MSI motherboard. I had asked for the D850MVL (intel) board. When I swapped it out, I no longer needed the LAN pci card that came with it because the intel board had one built onboard. There was still a line in my device manager that had the old LAN drivers in it. I removed it and it seemed to clear up my problems, then disabling the intel onboard LAN made it even better! (I'm not networked presently anyway).
There was also one other thing I did that helped me. Charles asked about which OS, so I looked for Win982e update info. I found this which also helped get it going:
Internet Explorer Navigation Sound Update
78 KB/ Download Time: < 1 min
Apparantly, the sounds that occur while moving around were bottlenecking me as well. So thank you Charles!
But the LAN changes were the biggest help! Now I'm just waiting on my 56K modem. Not waiting for my computer to decide to start using it.
Thanks again for your genius!
