G'day

Congratulation on a marvellous site and Bulletin Board. I discovered it through Google.

Although I have an HCF 56k modem I do not get a 'continuous easy throughput check Hawaiian song' because my ISP (bigpond) has advised me to put an initialisation string of &fx3s38=0-v90=0 in my XP properties. I can't sustain 40k+ contacts.

I am a retired electronics engineer and my intuition tells me that there should be a better command string than this.

Your information pages give me plenty to read and examine.

My subject line comes from my proximity to the place of that name, Surfers Paradise. It is a miniature version of Honolulu, but with the sand and surf on the adjacent beach rather than behind a reef. My home is 50 miles south by road but the high-rise buildings at Surfers can be seen from a local headland at Byron Bay.

&fx3s38=0-v90=0
Must be a modem with the lucent chip.
&F Local factory settings
X3 Dial Tone Detect Disable
S38 Enable/disable K56flex settings S38=0 Disable K56flex
-V90 Enable/disable V.90 settings V90=0 will disable V.90

One thing remove the &f from the string. Repost on the lucent modem. Would like to see a modem log.What driver version you have installed. If you are using 6.0 and above use +MS=V34 for the modem string that is what the string above is doing. Get the ati11 results in Hyperterminal.
(Although I have an HCF 56k modem) The string that you are using is for a lucent chip modem,not a Rockwell/Conexant HCF modem. If you have a HCF modem post on the HCF section.Do you know the make and model of this modem. If not is this a name brand pc or look on the modem board and post the FCCID#. Remove the modem string and use +MS=V34 it will work for this modem also. You will need the AT#UG and AT&V1 from Hyperterminal

Do you have any idea of what kind of telco facilities serve your line?
Are you in a remote area?

I've never been there, but my understanding is there's a fair amount of 56k-killing telco conditions in Australia. If your line can't support 56k connects, it would be best to disable 56k (which is what your current init is doing - but still best to take out the &F as Charles indicates.)

What driver version are you using?
What speed do you usually connect at?
What speed do you connect at if you remove the extra init string altogether (which will attempt higher rate)?
