I have a USR modem and recently it has been playing up, i.e. connecting at speeds less than 28 800bps. before i was getting speeds greater than 45K. i have the modem speaker turned up and the usual handshakes come on first, then there is two "bongs" for want of a better word to describe them! then it repeats the sounds like the start. does this mean that there is a problem somewhere? our phone was out for a while there, there was a terrible crackling noise on the line which the telco "fixed". there is no crackling now but the speeds are still really low. is there any advice on what i can do?

Check the results of
aty11
using Hyperterminal
www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.asp
after a connection.

See
www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-adconversion.asp

The boing is V.90 training; the handshake afterwards means V.90 wasn't negotiated, and the modem is trying to make a V.34 connect. If your line no longer supports 56k (do Ireland telco's use 'pair gain'?), you can disable 56k which will prevent attempt at V.90 connect -

I have tried emailing my telco enquiring about whether they use pair gain but there has been no response (no surprise there). I can only assume that they do use it because I used to be able to get speeds of 49333. I am including the results of an ati6 and ati11 query on my modem. For some reason, the aty11 command only returns a whole list of zeros. Does this mean there is something wrong? Thanks for the help!

You could try reinstalling the modem drivers to make sure they are ok. Can you take this pc to a friends house that has a good line? This would tell you if the problems is in the line. Do you know the model of this modem or have the FCCID#?

You've posted results from
at i6
and
ati11 (which look all out of whack - the values shown are 'impossible')

but, not the
aty11

the aty11 is the one needed to give an indication of your line quality, and to determine if there is pair gain on your line.

Aloha! Richard.

ok for some reason, my aty11 command worked. it usually gave me a list of zeros. here it is:
Freq Level (dB)
150 0
300 0
450 0
600 0
750 0
900 0
1050 0
1200 0
1350 0
1500 0
1650 0
1800 0
1950 1043
2100 5120
2250 1043
2400 5120
2550 5377
2700 24576
2850 768
3000 1024
3150 55388
3300 1340
3450 14554
3600 52646
3750 18700
hope this makes some sense, not like my ati11 command, how exactly is it "impossible"? that really doesnt sound good!

as regards a new driver, both 3com and windows update say i have the most uptodate driver. also my pc isnt that easy to lug around, my nearest neighbour being 2 miles from me, this is rural ireland after all.

anyways, ill leave this aty11 command in your capable hands, see what you can make of it!

First of all, if the value of 3750 is above 50, you may have poor local phone lines and may want to check into noise. Now, take the level of 3300 and subtract it from the level of 3750. If the value is 25 or higher, you most likely have too many A/D, D/A conversions which indicates that you can not achieve 56k speeds. If the value is between 20 and 25, you MAY have too many A/D, D/A conversions and you may not be able to achieve 56k speeds.

The ATY11 looks out of wack also.

Not new drivers but reinstall the modem in case the drivers became corrupt.Post a modem log also and try ATY14 in hypertetminal to check counrty settings.
http://808hi.com/56k/x2-adconversion.asp

Would also help alot to know the model of this modem and what OS you are using.ATI7 would also help. This would be the command ATI4I6I7I11Y11

are these all out of wack as well? i tried uninstalling and reinstalling the modem but no change. could it be that when my telco "fixed" the line, they messed it up so that it could only connect at low speeds?

Yes, I would say all the ati11 diagnostic #s look 'out of whack!'

The ati6 looks ok (1 retrain).

The handshake you describe in original post is V.90 attempt (bongs), failure, and retrain at V.34 (second handshake). It's possible the modem has a problem; or it's possible that something's happened to your phone line or between your switching office and your ISP, or at your ISP - you can begin to try and isolate where it is....
www.modemsite.com/56k/demarc.asp

Until you fix it, you can reduce your handshake time by disabling V.90 & x2 on the modem

Aloha! Richard.

I would like to see the modem log. From what I have found this modem is listed as xx2884A.
http://www.usr-emea.com/support/s-group-template.asp?group=s-analogint&page=downloads&loc=unkg#2884a

I would say that there is a prblem in the line.

I am at college for the week, but once i get home on friday evening, I will post up my modem log. I have deduced that my telco is at fault...they have been out numerous times to "repair" the line but they are incompetent...all they worry about is making sure the voice line works, they couldnt care less about data transfer. I will try again emailing them and perhaps sending them a copy of my ati results...

Tell them you are having trouble in faxing and in phone calls. Put S32=98 in extra settings
