ncoulson Tl Posts: 5 USA | Posted - 1/31/2003 10:57:16 AM I had to reformat my hard drive because of viruses. When I got it back up my modem wouldn't work, starting to make loud noises when initiating. I bought a USR 5569B. I could not get it to work and so I've been trying to reinstall it. But I can't get Windows 98 to accept any drivers as satisfactory; neither the drivers supplied on the installation CD nor the drivers downloaded from the USR website. I've reinstalled the modem in a different slot and run wmregdel from my Windows 98SE CD.I've removed the machine's network card. USR technical help gave me a standard message to delete 2 USR *.inf files and 2 USR *.bin files. But otherwise they give no help. All of this to no avail. My machine is a Pentium III 600 HZ. Does anyone know the correct drivers and where to find them? Do I load drivers for (1)a modem,(2)a "PCI communications device" and(3)a "wave driver" or just 1 or 2 of them ? Any help appreciated. Nick Coulson.

charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 1/31/2003 11:27:46 AM How are you installing this modem. remove all drivers from the add/remove program, check the device manager for any listing of modems and remove also remove any com port also.Check for unknown device and remove.Reboot and windows should find new hardware and point it to the drivers.Check the modem model again. If you are showing com ports in the device manager you may need to disable them in the bios.then install the modem. charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 1/31/2003 11:34:10 AM Windows 98 Users Turn on your computer. Insert your Installation CD-ROM into your drive before Windows opens. When the Add New Hardware Wizard appears, click Next Next. Select Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended) Recommended), and click Next Next. Select Specify a location and click Browse Browse. Double-click your CD-ROM drive and select Drivers Drivers. Click OK OK. Click Next Next. When the driver is found, click Next Next. Click Finish to complete the installation. |

ncoulson Tl Posts: 5 USA | Posted - 2/1/2003 5:01:36 AM I appreciate your help, and followed your suggestions. The machine booted up looking for "an unknown device" which it could not find a driver for; then it installed software for a COM port. Then it looked for a driver for "PCI Communications device". I directed it to the installation CD per USR manual. It couldn't find drivers. I directed it to a directory where I'd downloaded drivers from USR website. It didn't want to load those either. I am now showing COM port in device manager. How do I disable them in the BIOS ? |
ncoulson Tl Posts: 5 USA | Posted - 2/1/2003 5:20:02 AM I was scolling through your forum and as a result decided to explore my registry. under LOCAL MACHINES ...ENUM I've got my old modem "Lucent Win Modem" listed in the Sub-Directory of "MODEMWAVE" I've also got PCI&VEN_listed as a sub-directory of this. Then I have 10 entries under PCI all starting VEN_ I guess I need to remove these, but of course don't like messing with the registry. How should I remove them ? |

charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 2/1/2003 7:50:59 AM Do not remove these.Check the modem again is this correct USR 5569B.Remove the drivers from the add/remove,remove modem from device manager.Double click the modem icon in the control panel and if there is a modem listed there remove.Shut down and remove the modem from the pc.Boot up with out the modem, check windows inf file for inf only for this modem and remove, check file other inf for modem files.boot to safe mode, check the device manger for any listing of modem or unknown device remove,go to ports, put a check in com port to disable in this hardware profile.look under sound and games and remove the modem wave device, run regedit and remove only what is listed for the modem, high light the reg file and look in the right hand pane and make sure it is for your modem. There will be other pci ven devices for other hardware,do not remove these. What drivers did you download for this modem? do you have PCI Serial Controller under Other Devices in Device Manager? |
ncoulson Tl Posts: 5 USA | Posted - 2/3/2003 6:02:09 AM Charles, I appreciate your patience. I don't know how to disable COM ports in the BIOS. Which .inf file is the one for the 5569B? I can only disable COM ports if I also disable printers. I did this. The R.H. panel of my regedit does not identify devices under PCI Ven. The drivers I used were from USR installation CD and from USR's website: 5569B.exe. I tried both. I don't have a controller under other devices in device manager. I realize I'm a neophyte, and appreciate if you reckon we can't go much further over the internet. In which case I will reformat and reload windows. Nick Coulson. |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 2/8/2003 8:52:09 AM One thing you can do with respect to the old modem entries - run ltremove.exe This should clean the registry from entries involving the LT Win Modem. Ltremove.exe is probably on your hard drive (it would have been installed along with the LT driver); or it comes as part of the generic LT drivers (like 8.24)... Your USR modem - what's the model # ? If you remove the modem from system physically, does device manager's listing change?

charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 2/8/2003 4:10:48 PM I would remove all modem drivers, remove any modem listed in the device manager, remove any modem wave device, remove any unknown device.remove any com ports do not remove the printer ports.shut down and remove the modem from the pc.Boot up,check the device manager again.reboot to safe mode, check the device manager, remove the same above if listed, run regedit and remove any modem entry under enum, only remove modem entry.Sometime even removing the drivers it will not remove the reg entry.Windows thinks this modem is still installed.reboot to windows shut down and put modem in the pc,boot up and you should have no problem installing. |
