I used to be a big fan of USR hardware (controller based modems) for about six years. My last modem with ISA connector worked flawlessly in my old system. I used to upload 20-30 MB of information two three times a week by leaving my computer on at night. My old USR Sporster modem has never lost connection unless ISP disconnected it. After my last upgrade to Pentium 4 based ASUS motherboard (a good one) I was forced to get another modem because the new motherboards does not have ISA slots anymore. I have purchased retail boxed 3COM USR 5610A PCI modem and I thought that this will solve my problem. I was so naïve. I did not have any problem with handshakes; the modem connects consistently at 40 – 50.1 rates but I have situation where connection is still on but no information is coming in/goes out. The only way to “restart” it is to select disconnect and redial. I did not find any pattern regarding what causes my modem to “die” without officially disconnecting. I have a high quality wire going directly to my phone pole without any attached devices between phone pole and modem but still I don’t know when my modem is going to “freeze” and stay “frozen.” I have purchased another newer 3COM USR 5610B modem (V92) but it acts same, even worse, it gets “frozen” more often then the old one. I have purchased the old USR Performance pro 5610 modem on Ebay and it works much better but sometimes it also goes to the “frozen” state. It looks like the whole line of 5610 based modems has some flows. Can anybody recommend/sell me a good controller based internal PCI modem that will stay connected like my old ISA modem did? Or could anybody help me to diagnose this problem. By the way, I sold my old USR ISA slot modem to my friend, and it also performs very well on his computer by consistently connecting at 52,000 and stays connected.

I think the USR problem is related to the DAA - no relay no audio transformer - but, I could be wrong...
As for diagnosing - check the post-call diagnostics after you disconnect to see if anything looks amiss \

Controller-based PCI modem chipsets other than USR include Lucent/Agere Venus ( www.modemsite.com/56k/venus.asp ) and Conexant ACF\

USR's 5610B modem is known to be very sensitive to EMI. Could be due to certain types of equipment in the house such as light dimmers or being nearby to a radio station. RadioShack sells an RF Filter for about $12 that cures most problems. You'll see an improvement in both connection speed and ability to stay connected.

I also tried RadioShack's ADSL filter. Seems to work too and cost a bit less at $10.

When my BestData (a misnomer if I ever heard one) kicked the bucket yesterday, I rushed down to CompUSA and plopped down a hundred bucks for a USR5610B so I could get back online. Today I ordered a Modemsite modem and plan on taking the USR back. It cannot connect at any speed other than 38.6 (except before I updated it when it would only connect at 14.4), it happily ignores incoming calls and has a host of other lesser mostly software related irritations.

Yes I would take the USR back, they are way over priced. Most of these modems are just software updated from one model to the other.
