| MIKEWHEELER Tl Posts: 1 USA | Posted - 9/3/2003 4:30:01 PM    I'm trying to find a good combination of hardware for dial-up access to a Windows 2K terminal server. Currently I'm using external USR Sportster 5686-03 modems upgraded to V.92 at each end and can only connect at 26.4K. I'm able to connect to my ISP on either phoneline at 50K so I would think the line quality would be good. I would appreciate any recommendations on what hardware to use to achieve fast dial-up connections to a Lan or Server. What do the ISP's use for hardware? Thank You. |
| v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 9/5/2003 9:19:31 AM  In order to connect at anything above V.34, one of the modems must be a digital server modem which needs a digital phone line (ISDN). ISPs typically use equipment that connects to 1.544mbps or higher digital lines ($$$$) supporting at least 24 simultaenous inbound calls. Virtual Private Networking via broadband connections (cable or DSL) is a better way to do what you want assuming the service is available at both locations. Aloha! Richard. |

I have a USR Sportster 5686-03 modems upgraded to V.92 on an NT 4.0 Remote Access Server and an Agere Win Modem on my Dell Laptop. Until today, I connected reliably at 28,800 computer to computer, 56K Dell to ISP and 45.3K NT to ISP, frustrating. Today I updated the drivers on the Dell to version 8.3 and can now connect computer to computer at 33 or 31.2, hmmm not much better. I was going to order the LT Win modem on this site, but I see it is not currently available. |
