In the last few weeks my dial-up connection has been "disconnecting" from the Internet but not disconnecting (hanging up) the phone connection. I can go for hours without a problem or it can occur within minutes of connecting to the net. The screen freezes; however, minimizing the window and disconnecting/reconnecting the dial-up ISP brings everything back to life. A USR 2977 modem is used and the computer has ample power; OS is WinXP Pro. The connect rate is always 49 Kbps and thruput ranges from 4.5 to 5 KBytes/sec. I dropped the max speed to 57600 bps and added initialization string commands to max connect @ 48 kbps and min connect @ 36 kbps, and disabled V.90 & x2 with no success. Is this a "retrain" issue? The screen freeze occurs either inside or outside of my browser (Netscape) ie. when downloading MS and Norton update info.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Gary Hansen

It sounds to me like a driver/Windows problem -

I would try checking modem driver (see if latest driver installed/update); modem in a different PCI slot; eliminating any unnecessary software running at startup...

Richard:

Thanks for your response - 3com/USR has dropped the driver for this modem from their web site - still listed but nothing downloads. When reading the USR's ModemLog I noticed that after "CONNECT 46666bps" the next line said "Error-control off or unknown" and the following line said "Data compression off or unknown". My "beginner" interpretation was that retrain could not occur properly because the XP driver wasn't quite correct for the old USR 2977. I took the coward's way out and installed a Zoom 3025C from our back-up HP computer and the drops have stopped. The Zoom ModemLog shows random disconnects from the internetn but retrain occurs and we're back online.

Thanks again,
Gary Hansen

USR has no XP drivers for this modem but do have 2000. Another drivers here if you need it later.

You definitely need the modem to have error correction on - either the modem is returning an undefined response (bad driver/.inf install) or the modem isn't connecting with EC. Check the modemlog - it will have the actual modem response at connect.

Charles and Richard:

Thanks for you interest in this issue. Below are portions of the last USR 2977 ModemLog recorded just before I installed the Zoom unit:

For the next 0.6 seconds the modem tried to recover writing over 150 lines of text to the ModemLog before shutting down.

This info is also of interest:

I really like the USR diagnostics and the USR modem worked perfectly using Win98 for a year but its clear that the USR 2977 and WinXP Pro don't like each other. I'm also concerned that such a fine company as USR could fall on hard times and sell the "junk" that been documented on ModemSite and and other technical places.

Charles: thanks for the driver info - I believe that I tried the use the Win driver you identified but XP advised that the "built in" driver was a better choice.

BTW Richard I installed the ModemSite V.92 softmodem I bought from you last year in a computer I built for my daughter - works like a champ. I may be a customer for the DSP version you now offer if I can't find a Win XP compatable hardware modem.

Regards,
Gary Hansen

Doesn't specify any error/compression in connect string; however
Data Compression V42BIS 2048/32
indicates it was negotiated -
may have a 'bad' init string - would suggest dialing in Hyperterminal after giving modem
AT&F1
and see what kind of CONNECT string you get and what the diagnostics show;
I would also note - you say connect speed is always 40-something, but the diagnostics you included show 24k -
Data Compression V42BIS 2048/32
Equalization Long
Fallback Enabled
Protocol LAPM/SREJ
Speed 24000/24000

the part of modem log you didn't include after
AT#UD
is modem's encoded universal diagnostics.

Win2k drivers should work for XP.
Your modem is external? There shouldn't be any difference in performance with different OS assuming same modem initialization string....

Aloha! Richard.

Richard:

The last USR "problem" ModemLog was over six pages long which is why I didn't send it along. When I feel motivated I'll put the USR modem back in the WinXP Pro "main computer" and play with it but for the moment the Zoom 3025C is working OK and the USR is working fine in the HP Celeron Back-up computer.

I'll also learn to read a ModemLog completely ... always something to learn!

Cheers,
Gary Hansen
