USR 56K Voice INT PnP in Win95 as very loud dialing and handshake sounds. Have volume slider in Modem controls all the way off but doesn't affect loudness at all. Is there another way to reduce or disable dialing sounds?

M0 Speaker always off
M1 Speaker on during connection
M2 Speaker always on
L0 Softest volume
L1 Soft volume
L2 Medium volume
L3 Loudest volume

You can put M0 in extra settings to turn off

0 is zero.

I already have AT&FX in the Extra box, do I add a comma and then L0? If so, I've tried that and it disabled the modem, "hardware failure" I think was the message.

Remove the string and put M1L0

You may need to reboot

M1L0 does not make a difference, it's still way loud when connecting.
M0 when used alone will silence the modem, but if used with the init string, AT&FX, I get a 630 error.

Is there another way to silence or tone down the modem connecting while still using the init string?

You do not want init string that has &F with any USR modem.
USR uses
&F1 for 56k defaults.
But, you shouldn't use it anyway - only add strings that are actually needed - in your case, just
m0
to silence modem

Don't use a comma between commands. If you were to use the AT&FX command and the M1L0 commands, the string would be:
AT&FXM1L0

But I would recommend that you follow Richard's advice about not using AT&FX with USR modems.
