My Courier internal modem has the latest firmware dated 3/13/98.

With the ati6 command, the V.90 peak rate is not reported. This does seem to be reported by other USR modems.

Secondly, the &U &N commands do not seem to work reliably in limiting the connect rate. The modems fail to negotiate and hang up maybe half the time. Are there any known problems in the code that might be causing this?

Thanks, Kent

I don't believe the Courier has ever had a V.90 peak speed parameter as the non-Courier USR models do.
I11 also has minor variations in speed-shift reporting vs non-Courier models;

The &U&N commands are 'flakey' with every USR modem firmware I've ever tried - Courier & Sportster; whether the commands work or not is a crapshoot - it might have something to do with the modem being called, but I'm not sure...

Richard,

Thanks for confirming my suspicions on the Courier.

The Courier used to be considered one of the premium modems, but I wonder if it connects as well as some of the more recent designs, perhaps using other chipsets.

I am not getting any consistency at all, and I have 5 different Compuserve 56K numbers to call.

I've had great connections that transfer over 5K Bytes per second on a 200 KB file, and the next connection might be terrible.

I may wind up going back to V.34 where I connect consistently at 31.2K.

Actually, there is little difference in performance among USR vs Courier (hardware) modems at 56k speeds, and in some cases, the (later) Sportster/USR firmware performs slightly better than Courier.

The USR & Courier modems probably have the best overall 56k performance of any modems.

Richard
