What OS are you running? Has this always been a problem? Have you had a second phone line installed. Being this is a notebook have you tried the connection were there was a known good connection and last have you updated the drivers from gateway?

Thanks Charles... Yes I tried all those things.
I'm running XP home edition. This is a refurbished
notebook from Gateway. This is my second one from
them in a week... both experiencing the same problem.
Even went to a neighbor and tried their phone lines.
I'm also using a Gateway desktop with no modem problems
using the same phone lines as the notebook?? Again thanks
J.V.

What is the PCI\VEN of this modem? Note the modems inf shows a BCM , AMRIntel.Modem.
Does this modem show a nic card also,if so disable it. Are you connect with the power or battery?

The driver at gatway shows Version 3.4.22 might try this one here for BCM modem. Version (v.3.5.24)Note before install.

Note: Prior to this version, V.92 Modem-on-hold required 3rd-party BVRP software. With this driver version, BVRP MoH software should be uninstalled prior to driver install/upgrade. This driver version has MoH built-in to the driver

hard to find any modem commands.

Force V34 (disable x2/v90/v92) S50=23 S51=31
Force x2 (disable v90/V92) S50=23 S51=63
Force V90 (disable x2/v92) S50=23 S51=95

Might try putting S50=23S51=95 in extra settings to force V90
Gateway calls this modem the Palmer Modem
