Just installed a USR5699B in a MPC 2.4 ghz desktop running WIN XP. I get a 692 hardware error when I try to log into the pc and tell it to use dial up networking to log on. If I set up a local account on the pc and can log in this way, then I can use dial up networking and the modem works great. This is not going to be acceptable for our users. Any ideas as to why the modem won't work properly from the original logon screen. USR tech support says it is a Microsft problem(you know the song and dance). Any help would be appreciated.

Are you using the same name for log in as in the user name of connection? Make sure the modem is turn on before you power up.

Rich,
If possible return the modem and get your money back. I am in the exact same boat on W2K. I am aware of the links Charles sent, but you can't get a 692 error on the Ctrl-Alt-Del screen if the connectoid (the entry in DUN) is not configured to "Anyone". This is a USR fault, not a Microsoft. I have USR Sportster 56K that I can get to work on the exact same machine using Logon using dial-up networking. It's not a service pack or patch issue either, I've tested all those scenarios. I have also tried the current driver version as well as the driver that came on the CD. It's strictly a problem with the USR5699B modem. If you check the modem log file in Windows, you'll see it fails to respond to the initialization string AT<cr>. Sorry to give you the bad news, hopefully you can get your money back (unlike me)

I have done some more research into this issue and have also contacted USR about it. Richard Gamberg, this web-sites founder has also asked me to elaborate on this issue, so here goes.
Problem summary:
I have a usr5699b in a W2K workstation. This workstation is registered in my W2K domain but is located at one of my users homes where she works from. The following scenario works:
The user first logs onto the workstation with cached Domain credentials. She can then connect into our VPN via an Internet dial-up connection using the USR5699B modem. The problem is she cannot browse the domain network. In order to do so she MUST check the "Logon using dial-up networking" option at the CTRL+ALT+DEL screen in W2K. When configured using the USR5699B the dial up connection fails with an error 692.
However, when I configure the exact same workstation with a USR Sportster 00568603 it works perfectly.

I essentially relayed the above to USR tech support and got this beautifully crafted response:

"This modem will not work to log onto another server until the drivers have loaded. When you are at the logon screen of
Windows 2K, the drivers have not completely loaded, therefore the modem will not be accessible."

I won't bore you with the patronizing "We appreciate you understanding how we design crap products blah blah blah". In short this modem is not Windows compatible, and the same goes for XP.

I have asked USR to forward me a list of all their internal PCI v.90/v.92 56Kb modems that ARE Windows 2000/XP certified, but I'm not holding my breath. I have asked if the modem this web-site recommends and sells is compatible, or at least supports the "Logon using dial-up networking" feature, but have not yet heard a definitive response.
