I'm kinda new to the modem game so I'll try to do the best I can to describe the problem.

There are multiple phone lines in the office and I am trying to get the modem to run on line 3. The thing won't run at all on any of the lines though. This is not modem specific as it happens in the other machine too with a USR modem in it. We're running windows 98 if thats any help (boss is too cheap to upgrade).

Basically, you need a phone jack that has only line 3 wired to it.

The office may have a location where all the telco phone lines come in, and some sort of control unit for multi-line phones?
You can 'tap into' line 3 from this location, and run a wire to a phone jack for the modem.

Aloha! Richard.

Do you need to dial a number to get a outside line? Make sure this is not a digital line also. This for earthlink but shows the setup.Make sure if you do not need area code to remove the check mark.Note
If you are dialing from a hotel, office, or other phone system that requires you to dial a digit such as 9 to get an outside line, insert that number before the access number.

No there is no number needed, and I'm not sure if its digital. The problem is basically fixed now but I'm still currious.
