My "Modem Site" Agere modem Shows Compression = 0%
in both the Sent & Received lines on my Win XP Pro
modem status applet. I'm certain I am connecting
to my Juno ISP with their local V.92/V.44 dial up
line. I am using the Agere v 8.3 drivers.

Is the 0% compression in this Win XP applet normal?

I did an ATI11 on my last connection (below) and it seems
to show V44 compression.

Am I getting compression... or not?

Thanks in advance for your help..

Dave

You are making a V92 connection. This could be a problem with XP and V44 compression.Do you have enable modem compression in modem properties? Try this put +MS=V90,0 in extra setting and see if the status will read the modem compression.

Charles,

Thank for the reply.

I double checked that hardware compression & hardware flow control are checked. Then I went into the Advanced Tab
on the modem via the Control Panel and added the +MS=V90,0 to the box that says "Extra Initialization commands". Then retried my connection... Still No Compressions showing on the applet.

This is an odd one 4 sure. Any other ideas?

Thx
Dave

Might try this if DUN is damaged.
Click Start > Run
In the Run box, type command and click OK.
At the DOS prompt, type netsh int ip reset c:\tcpipreset.txt and press <cr> (Enter key)
The system pauses for up to a minute while the TCP/IP stack is reset. The cursor returns but no message is displayed.
Type "exit" and press <cr> (Enter key) to return to Windows.
Close all open programs and restart the computer.

Check your connection here, note the use of hardware or software compression.

Different areas of Windows will show different measures of compression - and basically Windows doesn't know anything about modem compression - I think you're looking at a report of compression at a higher level (TCP/IP-PPP).

You can get an idea of what compression is doing for you via throughput tests; real-time monitor like Net.medic, etc.
www.modemsite.com/56k/netmedic.asp
www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-thru.asp
www.modemsite.com/56k/speedtest.asp

The V.44 report in your modem diag confirms you are connecting with that compression modem-to-modem.

Aloha! Richard.

Charles & Richard.... THANK YOU.

I greately appreciate the links and suggestions you've pointed out. Hopefully Richard is correct in that I'm actually getting compression.. it's just the Win XP applet is gimped up and not showing / detecting the compression.

Richard... with the "Modem Site" Agere modem... should I have "hardware compression" enabled and "software compression" disabled in the two Win XP config windows or do I have it reversed?

Kudos to both of you and to this site... and the Agere modem!

Dave

Hardware compression on; doubt it makes a difference what you set software compression to.

Aloha! Richard.
