I use Zone Alarm and have 256 mb, Win XP. Its very good but takes a lot of resources. Is there another firewall that's comparable? I tried Kerio, Outpost and Agnitum but none of them passed the GRC tests. The Windows XP firewall is very good in stopping incoming but is it safe for outgoing? Thanks.

I wouldn't worry so much about the resources - ZoneAlarm is good, and XP doesn't have the kind of resource issues Win9x did.

I suggest: run Task Manager in the background and check the 'Performance' tab - this will give you 2 graphs of CPU usage and PageFile(memory) usage.
You can also click on 'Processes', then click on the 'CPU' heading (twice) to sort by CPU usage. If 'System Idle Process' - system has nothing to do.... and that's the way it should stay unless you are doing something REALLY intense (like running a game).

Then ... you might want to go on and examine each one of the Processes that are running - search by their name on Google to get an idea of what they are doing.
You can free up memory by using Administrative Tools and stopping/disabling services that you don't really need or want... Also search for Microsoft Tweakomatic -

Aloha! Richard.

Before you ever make any changes make sure you make a restore date. There is alot talk about about XP and resources but if you check on this memory and resources are not the same. Some good info here.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2002010712042239

1. Press the Start button and click on Help and Support. Or, click on an empty area on your desktop then press F1 to bring up Help and Support. Or open MSConfig (Start>Run>MSConfig) and click the Launch System Restore button.
2. In the Help and Support Centre, click 'Performance and Maintenance'.
3. Click 'Using System Restore to undo system changes' and then click 'Run the System Restore Wizard' under the 'Pick a Task' heading.
4. In the System Restore Wizard, click Create a Restore Point and follow the prompts to save your system state in a new restore point.
5. At any time, if you wish to return your computer to the state it was in when you created the Restore Point, follow steps 1-3 above to get to the System Restore Wizard. Then click 'Restore my computer to an earlier time', and select the date on which you created the restore point you wish to return to.
Using System Restore means that even if you make a large number of changes, it's fairly easy to take your system back to the way it was before tweaking. If anything goes wrong and you're not sure what, go back to your restore point.

This is good to do if installing hardware or software to in case there is a problem with the install. Also good in case ever hit with a virus.

I have been using Sygate for some time and have been pleased with it.Any firewall is only as good as you have it set up.
