I just bought this modem but keep getting a 'no dial tone' error message when I try to connect. I was able to connect once with the modem, so it's probably not damaged. I have call answering and call waiting from my phone company.

I've followed the support info on the USR website with no luck. I sent them a couple of emails, but they haven't responded.

Has anyone else had a similar experience, or can you help?

Help much appreciated.

Try using Hyperterminal connected directly to modem COM port - issue commands to dial
ATD (number)
also, try
ATx1 (to disable dialtone detection), then dial command;

Also, check to see if country settings are correct -
check information screen

I'm using Win XP.
USR Support finally replied to my emails. They sent me new drivers that weren't on their website. I installed the new drivers and was able to connectthe first time I tried it. When I disconnected, I could not re-connect. On
the first two attempts I got an engaged tone. The third, and subsequent
times I tried to connect, I received the 'no dial tone' message again.
I was able to connect consistently if I unplugged the phone jack from the modem and plug it back in again.

Today, when I booted up the computer, I keep getting 692 error messages saying there is a problem with the hardware. I haven't changed any settings.
Any ideas?

If you have voice mail provided by your local phone company, your dial tone may be altered when messages are waiting. Retrieve your voice mail to restore your normal dial tone or you may add commas to the phone number like this ,,,,,XXX-XXXX

click ctrl, alt, delete and end task Rnaapp and try connection again. Also see if another program is using this connection.Make sure you have this conection set for anyone in dialup.Make sure the modem is turn on before you boot up. This also could be a usb problem with XP.Do you have sp1 installed for XP?
Might also shut down, try another usb hub.turn modem on boot up.

I've been trying all week to get this modem to work.I've tried everything with no luck. I guess it's going back to the store the first chance I get.
